The Maya Musical is a story of our journey to find our light. Maya, a partnership between Teach For India and Artists Striving to End Poverty, is an original script, with Broadway composed music that tells the story of Princess Maya's journey. Tasked to bring light back into her Kingdom, Maya and her friends use the values of courage, compassion and wisdom to lift 3 great curses that have been cast on the world. The show will open in November 2014.
Teach For India works towards that day when all children in India attain an excellent education. We believe that our students will lead the movement for equity in education and that one day, all children, like Maya, will have the opportunity to find their light. Today in India, less than 10% of our children will have the opportunity to go to college and be what and who they wish to be. We believe that when we reverse that statistic, India will move towards her greatest potential
Maya is much more than the promise of a spectacular show. It is a demonstration of what's possible for low-income children with no previous exposure to the arts. It is a symbol of the kind of education all children deserve - one that integrates academics, values and mindsets, exposure and access. The Maya journey takes 100 children on a life-changing journey of self-discovery where they, like Maya, literally embark on a journey of discovering their values and their brightest light.
Maya aims to directly touch all Teach For India's 32,000 children, and many children outside as well, through the Maya Book, Curriculum ideas, Film and the 100 Artists Program. Illustrated by Teach For India children, the Maya Book is a simplified version of the script, enabling any child to access the story and put up their own version of the production. Maya aspires to become synonymous with the belief that we have what it takes collectively to give every, single child an excellent education.
