Ssembabule, in south western Uganda, is one of the poorest districts in the country with more than 75% of the population living on less than a $US1 a day. Our organization identifies priorities and allocates resources on a pro-poor basis, giving priority to people and communities that we believe to be the most vulnerable. Mateete is a Sub-County in Ssembabule district and was selected because of the high levels of poverty, poor sanitation and hygiene practices, as well as lack of safe water.
The project will target the poorest of the poor, the vulnerable. In health, this will involve promotion of hygiene and sanitation best practices, provision of safe water and strenghthening of community based management structures for sustainability.
By encouraging development in the areas of hygiene and sanitation, provision of adequate safe water, the project will change the lives of over 12,000 people in Mateete,by empowering the community to engage in local governance, and micro enterprise.
