June 2025 Tumbatu Island Update

By Mary Randolph | Project Manager

The Marine Resources Conservation Information Centre was successfully constructed in Jongowe Village. This center is envisioned as a vital hub for community meetings, training sessions, and sharing conservation information for island residents. Additionally, the center will serve as an office for the documentation of materials related to terrestrial and marine resources, historical heritage, and local development. Community members participated in training sessions and study visits focused on various aspects of mariculture. A total of 311 community members were given the opportunity to learn and visit sites specializing in seaweed farming, sea cucumber farming, and octopus conservation. These visits also included a tour of fish farming areas in Jozani, where participants gained insights into the link between natural resource conservation and marine resource management. An experience-sharing session with 25 stakeholders took place after these activities
