Sundarbans Mangrove Forest the unique habitat for diverse flora and fauna. Specially the mangrove tree species are so diverse and worked for the coastal environment as barrier for natural disaster and huge carbon sink.
Last few decades the regeneration process of this mighty forest is going downwards. Global climate change, sea level rising, salt intrusion, agricultural expansion are the main reason behind it. But there are some other reason like the naturally grown saplings in the coastline get damaged by the grazing of cattle, shrimp fry collector and especially the coastal women collet the mangrove seeds to use it as cooking fuel as they barely afford another medium of cooking fuel.
Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been working since 2013 to solve this problem. BEDS has supported to establish 7 mangrove nursery in the coastal region of Bangladesh. BEDS given training the coastal women to use the mangrove seeds to raise mangrove saplings rather than use it as cooking fuel. Few of them got succeed and create a alternative income generation for her family. By seeing their success other women are also now interested to build a nursery and do the nursery business because of the demand of the nursery raised mangrove saplings. For the initial stages it require some support to the marginal women to establish the nursery and this is actually the season for set up a nursery due to the availability season of mangrove seeds is going on.

On 26th of July, the people of living near the Sundarbans mangroves forest celebrated World mangrove day 2023. The program was organized by BEDS and the it was divided into two sessions. In the first part a discussion session was done with the local community where they discuss about the importance of mangroves and how can mangroves act as coastal protection against any tropical storm. In the 2nd part 100 mangroves were planted along the river bank side. Almost 40 local people including the women and youth were participated in that celebration.

Sundarbans such and unique mangrove forest in the world, holding up diverse biodiversity and large storage of carbon sink. It’s also act as barrier for coastal erosion and save the coastal resources from severe natural disaster. So, increasing the mangrove coverage in the coastal are is one of the prime work BEDS has been conducting since 2013.
June to September is the planation season for Bangladesh. So, mangrove plantation during this season creates more opportunity to survive the trees and grows very well. The quality of the nursery raised mangrove saplings become high during this season. Even the mangroves seeds also become available during this entire season. BEDS do the plantation with the seed and seedlings. Plantation with seed was done at river bank side when there is availability of seed and when there is no possibility to avail seed then mangrove saplings is used for plantation.
This plantation season is most important season for BEDS to do the plantation activity at the river bank side. And So far BEDS restored almost 146 ha river bank area through mangrove plantation. BEDS aim to restore 350000 mangroves covering 70 ha area in the Sundarbans coastal region.

Ms. Rasima Sabzalieva, Student of MPhil in Conservation Leadership, University of Cambridge is planting mangrove at the first time in her life at the river bank side of the Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh and she is sharing her feelings as well as inviting others to conserve and restore mangrove to reduce the carbon footprint and supporting local people together with Chief Executive of BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society). BEDS is targeting to restore 200 hactors of mangrove by restoring one million 10,00000 in terms of livelihoods, biodiversity and carbon sequestration. So, we are always requesting all of to to keep your hands with us.
