Research updates from our scholars

Dear Lynn Sage Supporters,

As we get settled into 2016, we’re quickly filling our calendar with many events and campaigns that will help us raise much needed funds for breast cancer research. Our mission is simple: we exist to end breast cancer, and we believe we will get there fastest by funding researchers directly – and we can only do that with your help.

We are currently funding our fifth Lynn Sage Scholar, Dr. Athanassios Vassilopoulos. One of the best things about the research we fund is that its taking place right down the street from our office, and our supporters can meet our scholar personally. Each time we name a new scholar, we host a reception and tour of the research lab. A few photos from the tour of Dr. Vassilopoulos’ lab are included!

Dr. Vassilopoulos’ research focuses on the study of the genetic and biochemical connection between sirtuin genes and carcinogenesis as well as tumor cell resistance. Dr. Vassilopoulos is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Our 2013/2014 Lynn Sage Scholar, Dr. Sarika Jain, has been working to develop new cancer therapies by targeting an enzyme called "Mnk" in triple negative breast cancer cells. Her team is using drugs that block the enzyme and have found that at high concentrations of the drug they can block growth. Further studies will define if this approach can eventually be appropriate for clinical trials.

New Year, New Goals - January 2016

Dear Lynn Sage Foundation Supporters,

Happy New Year! The beginning of a new year is always a time of reflection, planning, and goal-setting. As The Lynn Sage Foundation works on our goals for 2016, we are reminded to keep our mission at the core of everything we do. In our first report of 2016, we want to share our very simple mission with you. We exist to end breast cancer, and we believe we will get there fastest by funding researchers directly – and we can only do that with your help.

We believe in funding research because it is the most direct route to finding a cure for breast cancer. While progress has been made, breast cancer is still the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in women. We also believe in making our grants personal by choosing to fund researchers that we know, trust, and have carefully selected with the help of one of the most trusted institutions in the country. Your donations are directly contributing to real research projects that are making big advances in ending this disease.

In 2015 The Lynn Sage Foundation has accomplished some big goals – we raised almost $400,000 for research, partnered with 161 restaurant partners for October’s Chicago’s In Good Taste, sent out 334 Cards for a Cure, worked with 12 unique fitness studios to host classes benefiting our cause, and hired a new team member.

After reflecting on 2015 and careful planning, we have decided to expand The Lynn Sage Scholars Program in 2016 by funding a second scholar. With your help, we will be able to continue funding Dr. Vassilopoulos as well as a new Scholar that is yet to be named. 2016 is an important milestone in The Lynn Sage Scholars Program, as we will reach and exceed $1,000,000 given in grants over the lifetime of the program.

Additionally, we are proud to continue funding our 2015/2016 Lynn Sage Scholar, Dr. Athanassios Vassilopoulos. Dr. Vassilopoulos’ research focuses on the study of the genetic and biochemical connection between sirtuin genes and carcinogenesis as well as tumor cell resistance. Breast Cancer Awareness Month - October 2015

Dear Lynn Sage Supporters,

Happy October! As you probably know, October is breast cancer awareness month, and if you haven’t already you will soon start to see pink popping up all around your city. This month is special to us and we’ve got so many ways that you can get involved, both in Chicago and nationally.

What makes us different is that we fund researchers in the early stages of their careers, right here in Chicago. We even offer our supporters a chance to meet our scholars about once a year and tour their labs! Our current Lynn Sage Scholar, Dr. Athanassios Vassilopoulos, is continuing to conduct important research that focuses on the study of the genetic and biochemical connection between sirtuin genes and carcinogenesis as well as tumor cell resistance. We are looking for corporate partners to join us in the fight against breast cancer. Corporate sponsors are needed for each of our major annual events, and for your support your company will receive advertising on our website, social media, and other print/online channels. We’re currently looking for partners for 2016 and have a lot of opportunities available! If you would like more information on getting a custom proposal for your company, please let us know.

Individuals can join us, too, by participating in our upcoming online silent auction for CHILL: An International Culinary and Wine Event, which will take place at the Merchandise Mart on November 12.
