Xiancao Elementary is a small, special-focus school where over half of the students come from single-parent, grandparent-led, or economically disadvantaged families.
Four years ago, the school transitioned into a public experimental education school. Teachers have made everyday lessons dynamic and diverse, extending learning beyond the classroom. Students learn to play the taiko drum, make grass jelly, run a campus TV station, and hold biweekly circle discussions to practice expression, listening, cooperation, and respect. While resources may be limited compared to urban schools, the students’ bright eyes and vibrant smiles shine with life.
During this visit, Ah-Hao (pseudonym) and Xiao-You (pseudonym) were initially a bit nervous. Yet the children’s gentle words—“Hello,” “Take your time”—helped them relax, and their smiles began to bloom. In that moment, we saw the seeds of inclusion quietly taking root in the children’s hearts.
We demonstrated the assistive tool, the “Rice Stick,” that our children with intellectual disabilities use at work. The students realized that with the right tools, our children can perform tasks skillfully, even more carefully than we might expect. The children exclaimed, “This is amazing!”—seeing not difference, but respect and understanding.
