Livestock for 200 Poor Families in Rulindo, Rwanda

The incidence of poverty in rural areas of Rwanda remains significantly higher than in urban centers, with 32.1% of rural populations living in poverty compared to 13.4% in urban areas. In light of these challenges, the Pigs for 200 Poor Families Project was launched to support vulnerable households in the Burega sector, Rulindo District. The initiative aims to provide pigs to families as a source of income, agricultural assets, and enhanced crop productivity through the use of manure.

1. Project Overview

• Objective: Support 200 poor families by providing pigs to establish a sustainable source of income.

• Funding Goal: $15,000

• Amount Raised: $650

• Funding Gap: $14,350

The project’s mission remains strong despite the funding gap: to enable families to improve their livelihoods, enhance health and nutrition, and increase access to education.

2. Challenges

Rural communities in Burega face multiple barriers:

1. High Poverty Rates: Rwanda has 39% of its population living below the poverty line, with 16% in extreme poverty.

2. Limited Infrastructure: Lack of access to roads, markets, and veterinary services hinders economic activity.

3. Low Household Income & Infertile Land: Families struggle to meet basic needs, including food, education, and health care.

These factors make it difficult for families to escape the cycle of poverty without external support.

3. Project Solution

The project provides a comprehensive livestock support program:

• Distribution of pigs to 200 families.

• Provision of pig shelters, feed, and veterinary care.

• Training in livestock management and technical farming skills.

Through this approach, families are empowered to create a sustainable livestock business, generating income, improving nutrition, and enhancing agricultural productivity.

4. Long-Term Impact

The project aims to:

• Transform the lives of 200 families through a reliable source of income.

• Enable families to afford education for their children, access health care, and provide nutritious meals.

• Promote financial independence and break the cycle of poverty in Rulindo District.

• Contribute to regional development by strengthening rural livelihoods and fostering self-sufficiency.

5. Next Steps

Although the project has not yet been fully implemented due to funding limitations, RWAYDAVO remains committed to:

1. Mobilizing Additional Funds: Close the $14,350 funding gap to fully implement the project.

2. Community Engagement: Prepare families with training and resources to ensure successful livestock management.

3. Monitoring & Evaluation: Track growth, health, and productivity of pigs, and assess the impact on household income and nutrition.

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks for your generous support of the Livestock for 100 Poor Families in Rwanda project. Your contributions mean a great deal to us and the communities we serve.

We regret to inform you that, due to limited funds, we have not yet been able to fully implement the project as planned. While our initial goal was to support 100 families with livestock, the resources received to date have only allowed us to begin with a small pilot.

Expenses and Progress So Far

In collaboration with the Burega Sector, one of the administrative sectors in Rulindo District, we have managed to support eight families by donating a pig to each. These families were carefully selected by local sector leaders based on their socio-economic vulnerability.

One of the Burega Sector leaders shared, “We have a long list of families that need such support. We hope you will continue to partner with us to bring change to our community.”

RWAYDAVO remains committed to this cause and has promised to continue providing assistance as long as we receive funding and support from compassionate donors like you.
