Women making Khuwa in Khawa CFC
Women making Khuwa in Khawa CFC

In the previous quarters the women in Nala and Khawa received various trainings on food processing such as Lapsi candy making, Pickle making, Tofu making, and also dairy processing where they learned to make various products such as Khuwa ((Khuwa is a type of condensed milk from which various types of sweets and confections are made), Paneer(cottage cheese) and other sweets. Through these trainings the women of the community have acquired the knowledge and skills to make various food products utilizing the locally available resources. But just having knowledge to make the products was not enough. They also needed knowledge to commercially produce these products and market the products. They need financial management skills. Therefore, in this quarter SABAH’s primary focus was on providing the Business Development Training and handholding support to market their products.

Community Enterprise Development Training & Business plan Development Support Programme

The programme focused on making the women understand the importance of business planning and the planning necessary steps to achieve the set objectives through the use of Action Plan. They were also given inputs to make them understand the importance of business records, determine the type of costs of the business and calculation of profit and loss through the preparation of periodical Profit and Loss Statement, and discussions were held on necessary measures to maximize the profit from their businesses. To reduce the cost of production SABAH has provided an ‘Improved Stove’ in which they can use locally available farm waste instead of using cooking gas. This has reduced the cost of production and maximized profit for the CFC.

Marketing Support

The women now have skills necessary to produce various products and a proper structure and skills to produces. Now what they needed was the market. One of the pressing concern for the women in these communities was the lack of market access. To address this concern, SABAH provided support the women in the communities to connect them with markets where better prices are paid for their products. The quality of the product is ensured and proper packaging is being developed to support the branding of the products. Now their products were linked with the appropriate market and socially responsible buyers. Necessary steps were taken for the identification of favorable markets. As a result of this following outcomes has been achieved.

Khuwa order from village café

The Village Café, an initiative of SABAH Nepal has signed a contract with the CFC in Khawa to buy the Khuwa produced from the centre. In July, Village Café has bought a total of about 100 kilograms of Khuwa from Khawa CFC. According to the Village Café Coordinator, the Khuwa from Khawa CFC is of higher quality than what is available in the market. For this reason they are willing to pay Rs 100per kilo more. This has motivated the women to make Khuwa and has seen Khuwa making as a viable business opportunity. Currently, 40 women in Khawa regularly come to the CFC in their free time on a rotational basis and make Khuwa.

Participation in various Fairs & Exhibitions

The members of Nala and Khawa have participated in various Fairs and Exhibitions with support from SABAH Nepal to sell their products. During the last three months they have participated in in various fairs such as Dhulikhel Food Festival, National Cooperative Conference in Hotel Yak & Yeti in Kathmandu, Agriculture Trade Fair in Bhrikuti Mandap. They have also sold Lapsi candy in local election venues during the local election. The women in Nala have also registered a cottage industry name Jagaran Lapsi Paun Bhandar (Jagaran Lapsi Candy Store).

New markets

Sumitra, the leader of Khawa CFC has also contacted the Dhulikhel Mountain Resort, a famous luxury resort, which is only 5 minutes distance from the CFC centre to sell Khuwa. The resort has assured to contact them whenever they need Khuwa and also queried about Paneer (Cottage Cheese) which they need on a regular basis. Likewise, she has sold Khuwa as samples to some locals and all of them have appreciated its quality which has given Sumitra confidence to sell and approach new customers. In the coming days SABAH will continue to market their products from its outlets and different marketing events.

On the Job Trainings

Khuwa making On the job training continues in Khawa. The 42-day Khuwa making OJT improved the quality of Khuwa significantly. They were also able to sort out various problems that they faced during the Khuwa making such as curdling, thickening etc. 25 women were have involved in the OJT training and are now efficient in Khuwa making. A milk fat testing equipment has also been provided to the CFC in Khawa and the women are given training to use it. Now the women will get paid for the milk as per the fat content in the milk. Similarly Lapsi processing continues in Nala CFC, and a pickle making OJT was carried out where 14 women participated.
