Project narrative report

By Ziyad Dede | CEO

This project aimed to enhance the living and working conditions of informal waste collectors in Idlib by transforming unsafe, unregulated waste collection practices into a structured and sustainable livelihood system. It responded to the growing waste crisis caused by prolonged conflict, which had exposed collectors to significant health and environmental risks.

Key Interventions:

  • Provided personal protective equipment (PPE) and delivered occupational safety training
  • Implemented Cash-for-Work activities to offer short-term income opportunities
  • Conducted awareness sessions on legal rights to promote protection and recognition of waste workers
  • Carried out community campaigns on waste segregation to improve public hygiene and reduce workload
  • Distributed small business grants to support the establishment of micro-recycling enterprises

Results and Impact:
The project improved working conditions, increased income opportunities, and enhanced dignity for waste collectors. It also strengthened community engagement in waste management, reduced environmental hazards, and promoted sustainable practices aligned with circular economy principles.

Conclusion:
By integrating vulnerable workers into a more formal waste management system, the project contributed to inclusive urban development, improved resilience, and fostered social cohesion in conflict-affected communities.
