July 2021 marks a significant milestone for Shivia and we want to thank you for helping us to reach it.
In 2011 we launched our ‘flagship’ programme, Poultry Development Services, delivering toolkits and training to women in rural West Bengal to enable them to start a small chicken farming enterprise from home.
Since then, our field team has delivered 100,000 toolkits, each containing 10 one-day old chicks.
Which means that we have delivered a total of ONE MILLION CHICKS!
So, thank you for helping us and our wonderful team on the ground in India (pictured above) to achieve this significant milestone.
The reality behind these figures is that over 15,000 people living on or below the poverty line (and predominantly women) have been given the opportunity to earn a regular income from raising chickens.
Our farmers have faced a tough year with Covid. Added to that, two massive cyclones hit the villages around Kolkata, resulting in flooding and severe damage to their simple homes.
Despite these difficulties, we are delighted to report that 465 of our farmers recently graduated from the programme to become fully independent of us and are now running a poultry farming business of a significant size for long term prosperity.
