Challenge

Many children in rural Ghana grow up without access to books leading to struggles in writing imaginative stories in high schools due to lack of resources and mentorship. Primary and junior school children rarely see stories that reflect their lives and culture, limiting literacy and engagement. Without exposure to reading and creative writing children are less likely to develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed academically. Girls in underserved communities are especially affected.

Solution

Lit for Life gives children in rural Ghana and the DRC access to books, reading clubs, and creative writing programs that build literacy and confidence. Mini-libraries stocked with culturally relevant books encourage regular reading and comprehension. Writing clubs and competitions inspire creativity and help students express their ideas through stories that reflect their own experiences. The best stories are published into anthologies donated to rural schools as supplementary reading materials.

Long-Term Impact

Lit for Life aims to inspire a generation of young readers and writers who value learning, creativity, and care for the planet. Through stories and activities about nature, wildlife, and cultural diversity, children develop lifelong values of empathy, environmental stewardship, and respect for others. The program empowers students to build important life skills including critical thinking, communication, collaboration, leadership, global wildlife conservation, and appreciation of diversity.
