Dear Generous Givers and Lovers of the Literary Arts,
Happy Summer! This quarter, LJWC conducted four Life Journeys Writing and Mentoring Workshops in various summer camps! We engaged and had literary fun with children ages 3 (yes, 3) to 12 years old.
We made good on facilitating Maryland’s second annual Congressional District 05’s Black History Essay Contest for high schoolers, and we gave out monetary awards, thanks to generous givers like you and the support of ConstellationEnergy. We provided stellar judges/community activists and educators. And we celebrated with a diverse Open Mic/Awards Ceremony held at Maryland’s Bowie Public Library. Our guest speakers were phenomenal and encouraging to the students, many of them heading to college. Celebrating our nation’s 250th Birthday, we took our Essay winners, placing 1st through 4th, on a United States Capitol building tour to take in the sights and its glorious history. LJWC members also toured the United Nations in New York City, invited by another nonprofit organization that uplifts teens with world history.
LJWC’s Publishing Project continues to shepherd more writers toward authorship, and we continue to inform those who come to us seeking valuable knowledge about the publishing industry. Our topics not only celebrate the fulfillment of writing one's story, but also how to protect oneself from publishing, contests, and even imaginary book club scams. This month, we are offering a special workshop, facilitated by a Hollywood insider, writer, and producer.
Right now, we are creating two events centered around the Maryland Humanities’ 2026 One Maryland One Book (OMOB) book selection and getting the author to participate in person. LJWC served on the OMOB selection committee for 2026.
We will continue to conduct the Life Journeys Writing and Mentoring Workshop series for women and children living in transitional housing. LJWC continues to support participants and graduates of two programs that flourish in the Charles County Drug and Family Specialty Courts, which address a range of life skills and challenges, including substance abuse, homelessness, financial instability, the threat of incarceration, mental health therapy needs, and more. We also continue to support Families in Recovery, Inc., doing the same work.
I sincerely thank you for your tax-deductible donations and for the few dedicated givers who make recurring donations. Your generous gifts enable us to feed the passions of those who love and need to engage in the Literary Arts.
Kindly, I hope you will spread the good word about the wealth of writing, how we’re working hard to make a difference, and that even a modest monthly gift can fuel our impact on the world.
All in all, we are very grateful!
Thank you,
Yvonne J. Medley, LJWC Founder/Executive Director
