SAMPARK's - EARLY CHILDHOOD CARE & EDUCATION CENTRES FOR MIGRANT CHILDREN

"Empowering Minds: The Transformative Role of Libraries in young children" Sampark runs 26 Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) centers for children of migrant  workers. The centers function from 9.30 am to 5.00 pm from Monday to Saturday. Migrant children coming from low- income families are often left uncared for in the labor colonies while the parents work as contruction laborers. The ECCE (Early Childhood Care and Education) centers serve as a cornerstone for fostering the holistic development of migrant children, in Bangalore, India. They develop  school going dsicipline, cleanliness, hygience, recieve timely nutrition and immunization and are growing happy, haealthy and smart to make the transition from informal labor. Children who have been cared through the ECCE centres have grown up to become graduates, nurses today, reiterating the importance of ECCE.

Key Contributions of ECCE Centers:

Skill Development

  • Sampark follows age-appropriate activities, cognitive and motor skill building through arts, crafts, and storytelling.
  • Builds curiosity and creativity through STEM-related play and exploration.

Foundational Education - Sampark's Initiatives

  • Teaches basic literacy and numeracy skills for children.
  • Prepares children for seamless integration into formal schooling.

The structured routine followed at these centers, with a combination of drawing activities, learning alphabets and numerals through songs and activities, and the regular introduction of new cognitive activities, is essential for the holistic development of the children. By engaging them in such activities, Sampark is not only fostering their creativity but also laying the foundation for their cognitive and academic growth.

MINI LIBRARIES IN ECCE CENTRES

Establishing libraries in labor colonies can be a transformative step toward improving access to education for migrant children. By focusing on STEM and storybooks, Sampark is creating a dual impact: fostering curiosity in science and technology while nurturing creativity and literacy.

Here are a few strategies that enhance the initiative:

  1. Volunteer Programs: Interns conduct interactive sessions or storytelling activities for the children.
  2. Digital Integration: Included e-books and digital resources to introduce children to modern learning tools.

Absolutely! Providing children access to books in a well-designed environment enables them to explore their interests and fosters essential skills that contribute to their overall growth and development. Here's how creating such an environment can make a difference:

The consistent participation of 549 children above 5 years in reading storybooks at the center is a remarkable achievement. It reflects the positive impact of Sampark's initiative on their development and lays a foundation for lifelong learning.

The donation of storybooks from some friends in the UK has added immense value to the libraries, enriching the resources available to the children. These books not only broaden the literary exposure of the children but also introduce them to diverse cultures, perspectives, and storytelling styles.

Access to a library during the after-school program is indeed a transformative resource for children, offering both intellectual and personal growth opportunities.
