Let's Help Children With Cancer - Report 2021-06

In March, April and May of 2021, we continued the foundation's mission to help children with oncological illnesses. We are grateful to all who contributed to the $ 1777.29 support for children with oncological illnesses through the GlobalGiving system during the months from March to May. Only with the help of financial support we can contribute to a more successful treatment of our little patients. Together with doctors we can ensure the most advanced treatment regimens. We can also finance research that is not conducted in Lithuania. We can provide the necessary support for families or a cozy home space for a temporary stay with their loved ones at Rugute’s Home. We divided the amount of $ 1777.29 into three purposes.

One part of the received donations was used to give Bazile the opportunity to participate in a therapy program at the Dolphin Therapy Center. From the very beginning of the fight against oncological illness, the most anticipated word from the doctor's lips is "remission". Remission means the end of unpleasant and painful procedures, returning home, to a normal childhood or adolescence. Unfortunately, it often happens that after overcoming the worst - oncological - illness, children are accompanied by complications from the treatment they had received. The children then have to overcome the unexpected trials again again, which descend from the treatment they had experienced in the past. Bazile is one such child.

Another part of donations was used to purchase specific medications that are needed by individual childhood cancer patients but are not state-covered or not supplied in Lithuania at all. In order to ensure that the proper treatment is administered to the little patient Deimantas, the Fund bought Temozolomide 100 mg. During these months the Fund also paid 3,025.00 Eur for genetic screening of 1 child. The genetic screening and testing of young cancer patients in one of the most modern laboratories of Europe is a continued project, launched by the Fund in 2015. Its aim is to help Lithuanian doctors to detect the histology of the tumor, to foresee the progress of the illness and to individualize the treatment.

During the months of December, January and February, Rugute continued its activities and provided various support to children with oncological illnesses and to families who raise them.

We are grateful to all who contributed to the $ 3693.04 support for children with oncological illnesses through the GlobalGiving system during the months from December to February. Because of these funds, we bought central vein catheters (4 pcs.) and 360 pcs. of needles suitable for them for 2152 Euros. The Fund constantly ensures that long-term central vein catheter insertion procedures are performed to children with oncological illnesses when needed, which significantly improves the psychological well-being of young patients during the treatment and helps to avoid pain and multiple peripheral catheter insertion procedures. The benefits of such catheter are described by a girl with oncological illness: “When I got sick, every needle-prick seemed like the end of the world. Later it became more difficult to endure the catheter insertion procedures, as the veins from all chemotherapies had become very weak and brittle and felt like burned. A long-term catheter greatly improved the treatment. The nurses were able to inject medication while I was sleeping and I didn't feel anything. I was able to move completely freely.”

During these past few months, we also continued our support to a ten-year-old girl with melanoma. She is the first one in Lithuania to battle melanoma, an oncological illness that is very rare in children. It is for this reason that medicine to treat pediatric melanoma are not included in the list of reimbursable medication. For the treatment of Emilija, we bought the medicine Mekinist 2 mg N30, which costs 3055 Euros.
