During the months of December, January and February, Rugute continued its activities and provided various support to children with oncological illnesses and to families who raise them.
We are grateful to all who contributed to the $ 3693.04 support for children with oncological illnesses through the GlobalGiving system during the months from December to February. Because of these funds, we bought central vein catheters (4 pcs.) and 360 pcs. of needles suitable for them for 2152 Euros. The Fund constantly ensures that long-term central vein catheter insertion procedures are performed to children with oncological illnesses when needed, which significantly improves the psychological well-being of young patients during the treatment and helps to avoid pain and multiple peripheral catheter insertion procedures. The benefits of such catheter are described by a girl with oncological illness: “When I got sick, every needle-prick seemed like the end of the world. Later it became more difficult to endure the catheter insertion procedures, as the veins from all chemotherapies had become very weak and brittle and felt like burned. A long-term catheter greatly improved the treatment. The nurses were able to inject medication while I was sleeping and I didn't feel anything. I was able to move completely freely.”
During these past few months, we also continued our support to a ten-year-old girl with melanoma. She is the first one in Lithuania to battle melanoma, an oncological illness that is very rare in children. It is for this reason that medicine to treat pediatric melanoma are not included in the list of reimbursable medication. For the treatment of Emilija, we bought the medicine Mekinist 2 mg N30, which costs 3055 Euros.
We would like to give a loud and sincere THANK YOU to all of our loyal and loving donors on GlobalGiving. Children are getting better and happier because of you. They suffer less pain and experience more positive things than they would experience without your help.
We are sincerely grateful for the support provided for children, whose life is not easy and careless.
The year of 2020 was full of concern and worries for us and for ill children. At a time when work is being slowed or even postponed in many areas, the children’s fight against oncological disease must continue without a slightest break. Uncertainty about the future worries doctors and children’s families, questions arise about how to protect children and staff from being infected with Covid-19, whether all the necessary medications will really reach the little ones and whether there will be an opportunity to carry out the planned tests. Your support is very significant and important this troubled year.
During the months of September-November we received the donation of 1,288.64 USD through GlobalGiving system. It was used to buy medication for a girl diagnosed with oncological illness - melanoma.
We believe that your support can bring children back to a carefree childhood and fill the world with good and joyful moments.
Report June, July and August of 2020
Behind every packet of medicine held in our hands lies a story of a child's journey through illness. Most importantly, the packet is a chance to return home, to childhood, and regain hopes and dreams.
Unfortunately, recently it has often happened that medicine needed to treat a child with oncological illness is not reimbursed. The reasons vary: sometimes medicine is reimbursed only for the treatment of certain illnesses; sometimes data on treatment efficacy are insufficient, although international treatment guidelines describe a number of successful stories; sometimes oral medication is more appropriate for the patient but the costs are only covered for intravenous medication. However, each child’s treatment plan is individual, often requiring highly innovative and unexpected solutions.
We are sincerely grateful that because of your support we were able to buy medicine for 30,468.81 Euros.
Thank you for supporting charity fund "Rugute". You give children with oncological illnesses hope to recover.
Report
(March, April and May of 2020)
Lithuania, like the rest of the world, is facing a very big challenge - the spread of COVID-19. These days, children with oncological diseases feel twice as much anxiety. They fight an oncological disease and try to protect themselves from COVID-19 infection. The treatment of the little ones cannot be stopped or carried out remotely, they have to travel from one course of chemotherapy to another and fight for their lives. Recent months (March, April, May) have been difficult for the fund, raising many different needs. We are sincerely grateful that with your support we were able to dedicate:
The team of Childhood Cancer Fund Rugute is grateful to be a part of GlobalGiving and, as a consequence, to be able to ease the lives of sick children in Lithuania. Because of all of the kind people who donate money to our organization via GlobalGiving, more than a hundred families have received help in their grueling fight with malignant diseases. Thank you for your generous donations and for being with us!
Report (December 2019, January and February 2020)
During the months of December, January and February, Rugute provided monthly and non-recurring charity of 11,993.23 Eur to the families who used this money to purchase necessary medical care and food supplies and to cover other costs that they could not have avoided due to their child’s disease (for example, travelling costs). The money also helped the families to improve the psychological well-being of the children.
The Fund helped to purchase specific medications that are needed by individual childhood cancer patients but are not State-covered or not supplied in Lithuania at all. In order to ensure that the proper treatment is administered to the little patients, the Fund bought:
- medication Topotecan (cost: 233.44 Eur);
- medication Clisma-lax (cost: 551.52 Eur).
6.250,00 Eur of charity for A. R.‘s first surgery, accommodation, meals and other expenses endured during the planned surgery at Gdansk University Clinical Hospital‘s Centre of Children‘s Surgery and Urology;
Physicians of Kaunas Clinics requested Childhood Cancer Fund Rugute to fund Ukrainian citizen's K.M.'s treatment in Lithuania. The Fund paid 1,351.07 Eur for radiation therapy.
The Fund paid 3,025.00 Eur for genetic screening of 1 children. The genetic screening and testing of young cancer patients in one of the most modern laboratories of Europe, is a continued project, launched by the Fund in 2015. It‘s aim is to help Lithuanian doctors to detect the hystology of the tumor, to foresee the progress of the disease and to individualize the treatment.
The Fund has donated 1,500.00 Eur to the Lithuanian Children's oncology and Haematology Therapists Fellowship.
For the past three months, Rugute was also covering the maintenance costs of Rugute’s Home, the only facility in Lithuania that provides temporary accommodation to the young cancer patients and their family members, free of charge. Having found shelter in these premises, children with oncological diseases are able to have a break from their treatment and from being in the hospital. Rugute’s Home allows their family members to get a temporary accommodation while visiting children in the hospital. The total maintenance cost of Rugute's Home in December, January and February was 4,995.33 Eur.
On the 12th of December, 2019, five friends from Sweden arrived to Lithuania to continue on a beautiful Christmas tradition. They brought gifts to children with oncological diseases. Every time I come to Lithuania and meet those sweet children, I realize how lucky and fortunate I am. There are people arround us that have not been so lucky. I am happy to be able to provide at least a little happiness to them, - says Stefan Essperson, one of the beginners of this support campaign.
We are very grateful to our dear donors of GlobalGiving, who do not hesitate to contribute to the well-being of the little oncology patients in Lithuania. Thank you for thinking of us, and for being there for our children.
