With the financial support received via GlobalGiving, Childhood Cancer Fund Rugute has been able to continue supporting families that are facing financial hardships because of their children’s oncological diseases. During the months of June, July and August of 2014, the Fund estimated the importance of financial needs that such families had addressed in their requests for support, and provided both monthly and non-recurring charity of 27.000,00 Lt to them. Also, Fund Rugute provided financial support of 2.000,00 Lt to the young cancer patient Domas P. This money was used to cover the child’s rehabilitation costs.
One of the Fund’s major goals is to improve treatment possibilities and hospital conditions for Lithuanian children with oncological diseases. During the past three months, Fund Rugute purchased some important medical supplies for Children’s Hematology Unit of Klaipeda Children’s Hospital: a volume infusion pump, a syringe pump, a stand for the pumps and some infusion systems. Children’s Hematology Unit of Klaipeda Children’s Hospital provides medical aid and treatment to those children with oncological diseases, who live in the Western part of Lithuania. Often, when the child comes home after an intense course of chemotherapy, it is necessary to administer infusions of liquids and/or medicine, or blood transfusions to that child, in order to keep him/her in a fair health condition. Thanks to the Children’s Hematology Unit, children and their parents do not have to go to Vilnius or Kaunas hospitals and endure a hard and lengthy trip. The financial value of the support provided to Klaipeda Children’s Hospital is 10.430,20 Lt.
Thanks to the people who have been donating funds via GlobalGiving, Childhood Cancer Fund Rugute successfully covered the maintenance costs of Rugute’s Home. The cozy premises of Rugute’s Home create a safe and comfortable space where children in need and their family members can stay free of charge. From June to August, 2014, many children who had to arrive to the hospital for screening, and who were released from the hospital for short periods of time, found shelter in Rugute’s Home, and were very happy to spend some quality time in this (non-hospital) environment.
On the 29th of June, Childhood Cancer Fund Rugute held its yearly event The Island of Friends for the 9th time. This special event brought over a hundred of families together: children and their family members spent an entire day of fun, being free of worries and uncertainty. The event offered all kinds of entertainment: live music, fun performances, yummy food and unforgettable interactions for children and their parents.
From the 21st to the 24th of August, the fifth Onco-Olimpiada 2014 for children took place in Warsaw, Poland. The Polish organization Fundacja Spenionych Marzen (Fund of Dreams Coming True) invited the young cancer-surviving athletes from Lithuania to take part in the games. This time Fund Rugute delegated 10 participants to go to Poland. Children and their parents traveled to Warsaw by a comfortable private bus. Participants from Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia also participated in the games. The aim of this international event is to provide our societies with a better understanding of the issues the families with children who have oncological diseases face every day, and to bring young athletes from different countries together. Our children brought home Olympic medals and many good memories. We are happy that we were able to finance this wonderful trip to Poland with the help of our sponsors in GlobalGiving.
We give our most sincere thanks to all the great people on GlobalGiving who are willing to support the Lithuanian children with oncological diseases. Thank you for being with Childhood Cancer Fund Rugute, and for your kind donations. You give us Hope.
