Let's Help Children With Cancer - Report 2013-04

Another three months have passed, and we are happy to report about what has been done during those three months, by the optimal use of the funds that the kind people donated to Childhood Cancer Fund Rugute via GlobalGiving.

Our Fund continued supporting families with children that have been diagnosed with oncological diseases. During the months of January, February and March of 2013, the Fund weighed the importance of financial needs that such families had addressed in their requests for support, and then provided both monthly and non-recurring charity of 20.000,00 Lt to them. The families used this charity money to purchase necessary medical care and food products, and were able to cover traveling expenses and other costs that they could not have avoided due to their child’s disease. The money that the Fund provided to these families ensured a better physical and psychological (emotional) state of the little cancer patients.

Too, a part of the money that the Fund receives via GlobalGiving is allocated to one of the most important missions of our organization: to improve treatment possibilities and hospital conditions for Lithuanian childhood cancer patients.

During the last three months, the Fund was able to purchase some necessary medication:

Following the doctor’s request, in order to continue the effective cancer treatment by the medicine Temozolomidum, the Fund purchased a quantity of Temozolomidum for one teenage cancer patient. The total cost of the medicine Temozolomidum was 3.330,00 Lt;
The Fund also purchased a quantity of the medicine Exjade 250 mg for the price of 1.668,83 Lt. Cancer patient Andrius needs a constant intake of this medication in order to reduce the excess amount of iron that his body has been accumulating since the bone marrow transplantation and multiple blood transfusions.

The donors of GlobalGiving also enabled a young cancer patient, Juste, to receive a very important Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan, performed at the Nuclear Diagnostics Center in Bydgoszcz, Poland. PET scan is the most advanced nuclear medical imaging technique that provides comprehensive information on how lively and how widely spread the cancer cells are.

In the past three months, Rugute provided crucial medical equipment and other necessary items to the two major hospitals in Lithuania that treat childhood cancer patients:

infusion systems (500 items) and transfusion systems (100 items) that are used to administer medications, physiological fluids and glucose solutions intravenously. Total amount: 3.049,20 Lt;
long-term central venous catheters (4 items) and needles AIG Surecan G20 (60 items). Total amount: 4.239,94 Lt.

Young oncohematology patients experience a very difficult childhood compared to healthy children, as they are often isolated from their family and friends for a very long time. Many of these children are only able to communicate with their siblings and friends via internet, and Rugute provides moments of joy to these children by giving them computers. Recently, the Fund bought a new personal laptop computer for one more child with cancer (cost: 2.148,00 Lt.) The kind donors of GlobalGiving will be happy to know that they have contributed to making the sick child’s dream come true, as this child had been dreaming about having his own computer for a long time.

The Fund also bought two new laptop computers for the Game Room of the Oncohematology Center of Children’s Hospital in Vilnius (total cost: 4.497,00 Lt). These two computers will be available to all of the children that are treated at the Children’s Oncohematology Center. The Hospital Game Room is a place where little ones can play and engage in activities they love, and use the internet to communicate with their far-away friends.

Finally, the Fund has been succesfully covering all of the maintenance costs of Rugute’s Home, the only facility in Lithuania that provides temporary shelter to the young cancer patients and their family members.

The team of Childhood Cancer Fund Rugute is very happy to be a part of GlobalGiving and, as a consequence, to be able to ease the lives of sick children in Lithuania. Because of all of the kind people who donate money to our organization via GlobalGiving, more than a hundred families receive help in their gruelling fight with malignant diseases. Let's Help Children With Cancer - Report 2012-12

Thanks to all of the kind people who provided financial support to Chidlhood Cancer Fund Rugute via GlobalGiving, our fund continued supporting families that are facing financial hardships because of their children’s oncological diseases. During the months of October, November and December of 2012, the Fund estimated the importance of financial needs that such families had addressed in their requests for support, and provided both monthly and non-recurring charity of 42.300,00 Lt to them.

Fund has been continuously working on its major goal – to improve treatment possibilities and hospital conditions for Lithuanian children with oncological diseases. Following the doctor’s request, the Fund purchased 5 quantities of antifungal medicine Noxafil 40mg/ml. The total cost of the medicine Noxafil was 14.323,27 Lt.

The Fund also purchased a quantity of medicine Exjade 250 mg for the price of 868,83 Lt.

In order to ease the severe pain and discomfort the little patients experience from having multiple mouth ulcerations, the Fund purchased 2 quantities of mouthwash solution Caphosol and a quantity of mouth gel Gelclair. Both of these purchases together cost 1238,35 Lt.

The Fund also financed transportation of one young girl with cancer, from Gdansk (Poland) to Children Diseases Clinic in Vilnius (Lithunia), by an ambulance car. The transportation cost 5000,00 Lt.

During the months of October, November and December of 2012, Fund Rugute was able to provide some crucial medical gear and other necessary items to the Oncohematology Unit of Children Diseases Clinic of Kaunas Clinics:

Long-term central venous catheters (6 items) and needles AIG Surecan G20 15 mm (270 items) for 7426,98 Lt.
Infusomat tubes (500 items) for 2541,00 Lt.
Enteral feeding pumps Kangaroo ePump (2 items) and enteral feeding bags (30 items) for 6533,10 Lt.
Universal wheelchairs (2 items) for 1660,45 Lt.
A desktop computer and a monitor for 3161,86 Lt.

In December, 2012, there were two significant events, both of them traditional to Fund Rugute:

On the 1^st of December, 2012, the Fund invited everybody to attend the 9th voluntary blood drive Share a Droplet. The voluntary blood drive Share a Droplet that provides an opportunity to give hope to sick people, takes place in Rugute’s Home twice a year. This time, the informational bone marrow donorship campaign, Be Good, was represented at the blood drive. During the blood drive, anyone who wished to become a potential bone marrow donor was able to register with the bone marrow donor registry. The 9^th voluntary blood drive was a success: 45 donors gave blood, and 16 potential bone marrow donors were added to the bone marrow donor registry.

From the 6th to the 9th of December, Rugute’s caring friends from Sweden (also known as Swedish Elves) were visiting children with oncological diseases in Lithuania. Six times in a row, right before Christmas, they have been visiting the little patients in Lithuania, and giving them gifts that the Swedish students had prepared. This time, the Elves did not only visit children in the hospitals, but also in the children’s homes. On the 6th of December, they visited children in Kaunas City, and on the other days – children in Vilnius City. On the 8th of December, Fund Rugute invited children to come to Rugute’s Home and to spend a Saturday afternoon together with the Swedish Elves, where the Elves and the children had fun learning the painting-on-water technique, ebru. Those wonderful Christmas visits provided lots of joy to children with oncological diseases and their parents. As usual, Fund Rugute took care of the Swedish guests during their stay in Lithuania.

Needless to say, that with all the financial support received via GlobalGiving, the Fund has been able to cover maintenance costs of Rugute’s Home , the only project in Lithuania that provides temporary shelter to the little cancer patients and their family members.

Once again, looking back at the last three months, we are at peace, knowing that you, our kind donors, and our Fund, together, were able to do important things in order to ease the reality of sick children. We are immensely thankful to all the people who donated money to Lithuanian children with cancer via GlobalGiving. Thank you for being so kind and generous to us and for giving so much to our little ones.

Let's Help Children With Cancer - Report 2012-09

GlobalGiving Report: June–September, 2012

With the financial support received via GlobalGiving, Childhood Cancer Fund Rugute has been able to continue supporting families that are facing financial hardships because of their children’s oncological diseases. During the months of June, July, August and September of 2012, the Fund estimated the importance of financial needs that such families had addressed in their requests for support, and provided both monthly and non-recurring charity of 44.500,00 Lt to them.

One of the Fund’s major goals is to improve treatment possibilities and hospital conditions for Lithuanian children with oncological diseases. Following the doctor’s request, in order to continue on the advanced treatment scheme that was successfully administered to a teenage cancer patient before, the Fund purchased a quantity of Temodal (a medicine that is unavailable in Lithuania) for the entire following treatment course that was planned for this particular patient. The quantity of medicine Temodal cost 16.884,06 Lt.

The Fund also purchased a quantity of CeeNU (Lomustine), a medicine that is also unavailable in Lithuania, but necessary to treat young cancer patients. The quantity of medicine CeeNU cost 3.704,75 Lt.

Aiming to improve the psychological and physical well-being of the hospitalized children, the Fund bought 4 central venous catheters that cost 4.356,00 Lt. These catheters help to reduce the risk of infections and allow to avoid painful needle stabs that can be very traumatizing to young children.

Thanks to the people who have been donating funds via GlobalGiving, Childhood Cancer Fund Rugute successfully covered the maintenance costs of Rugute’s Home. The bright and colorful premises of Rugute’s Home create a safe and cozy space where children in need and their family members can stay free of charge. From June to September, 2012, many children who had to arrive to the hospital for screening, and who were released from the hospital for short periods of time, found shelter in Rugute’s Home, and were very happy to spend some quality time in this (non-hospital) environment.

During the last four months, our loyal sponsors enabled us to make one child’s dream come true. A young cancer patient received a brand-new laptop computer and was able to engage in some fun activities during the long days he spent in the hospital. The computer provided him with an access to the world, which is very important to children who have no possibility to meet their friends due to a high infection risk.

On the 22^nd of July, Childhood Cancer Fund Rugute organized its yearly event The Island of Friends for the 7^th time. This special event brought over a hundred of families together: children and their family members spent an entire day of fun, being free of worries and uncertainty. The feast offered all kinds of entertainment: live music, fun performances, yummy food and unforgettable interactions for children and their parents. Being at The Island of Friends, families can share the joy of the moment and take their mind off their child’s disease.

From the 24^th to the 26^th of August, the fourth Onco-Olympics for children took place in Warsaw, Poland. The Polish organization Fundacja Spenionych Marze (Fund of Dreams Coming True) invited the young cancer-surviving athletes from Lithuania to take part in the games for the second time. This time Fund Rugute delegated 5 participants to go to Poland. Children and their parents traveled to Warsaw by a comfortable private bus. Each of the children brought home an Olympic medal or even two! We are happy that we were able to finance this wonderful trip to Poland that gave our children so much confidence and pride, with the help of our sponsors in GlobalGiving.

From the 28^th of August until the 23^rd of September, a brave Lithuanian girl Vilgaile Kira Purlyte rode across Norway (from North Cape to Oslo) by her bicycle and dedicated her journey to Lithuanian children with cancer. She rode 2200 km in order to raise money for Lithuanian Childhood Cancer Fund Rugute. While she was biking across Norway and spreading the word about childhood cancer situation in Lithuania and Childhood Cancer Fund Rugute, kind people were able to support her cause by donating money via GlobalGiving.

We give our biggest, sincere thanks to all the wonderful people who are willing to support the Lithuanian children with cancer. Thank you for being with Childhood Cancer Fund Rugute, and for your kind donations. Even a slightest smile of a sick child is a miracle to us. Thank you for making this miracle happen!
