Help end perennial water scarcity for 800 families

By Pamela Jepkogei | Programme Manager CPD

The project aims to help end perennial water scarcity for 800 families in Abudwak district of Somalia through solarization of  a generator-powered borehole which is their sole water source. The families are copying by walking long distances up to 75km in search of water for domestic use and livestock. Some families have been forced to relocate to other areas in search of water.

The humanitarian situation in the greater Somalia is increasingly critical, exacerbated by flooding, drought, and ongoing conflict.  According to the Somalia Monthly Humanitarian Update, extreme dry conditions have been spreading, especially following the poor performance of the October to December 2024 Deyr rains(Short rains), which have left regions such as  Galgaduud facing significant drought challenges,

Recent projections from the Food and Agriculture Organization/SWALIM forecast below-normal Gu seasonal rains from April to June 2025, with detrimental impacts on agricultural activities and food security. The USAID funding cuts have further strained humanitarian assistance efforts in critical sectors including health, food security, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene).

Through the project, 800 households will receive uninterrupted, clean, safe and reliable water for both domestic use and for their livestock. The project will also utilize an existing borehole and its infrastructure and replace the use of expensively unreliable fuel generator and once it is complete, the abundant solar energy will forever change the destiny of these 800 families.
