The project aims to help end perennial water scarcity for 800 families in Abudwak district of Somalia through solarization of a generator-powered borehole which is their sole water source. The families are currently copying by walking long distance up to 75km in search of water for domestic use and livestock. Some families have been forced to relocate to other areas in search of water.
According to the UNOCHA latest report. many areas of Somalia have not received the anticipated October-December rains, exacerbating fears of projected La Niña-induced dry conditions. Below-average rains will aggravate food insecurity and exacerbate drinking water (scarcityhttps://www.unocha.org/publications/report/somalia).
Through the project, 800 households will receive uninterrupted, clean, safe and reliable water for both domestic use and for their livestock. The project will also utilise an existing borehole and its infrastructure and replace the use of expensively unreliable fuel generator and once it is complete, the abundant solar energy will forever change the destiny of these 800 families.
