Dear Friends & Supporters:

We had to postpone our scheduled events in Usa city (Oita prefecture) and Nagasaki city due to COVID-19. We are exploring online program “Global Career Series” for junior and senior high school students who will be expected to pave their way through their future in the global world. It is an interactive educational program where participants can learn about professional work and experience from the people who are globally active in various fields and study-abroad life from the students studying at overseas universities, and also ask the speakers questions directly. This gives participants not only the opportunity to think about their future life planning but also vital knowledge necessary to live in the international community. We are very looking forward to have WISE workshops in summer 2021. We will update our activiteis on our website www.jsie.net (Japanese) as well as www.jsie.net/en (English). Thanks again for your continued support.

All the best,
Hiromi Murakami

JSIE organized Kumamoto Followup meeting and provided members and supporters an opportunity to network and reconnect with colleagues and mentors from the past JSIE summer programs and to share thoughts and recent experience with them. We welcomed a former head of the nursing department at Jikei Hospital in Kumamoto who had played a leading role in installing/operating Japan’s first baby hatch "Konotori no Yurikago" for mothers to leave babies they cannot care for,  as a mentor-speaker. Her inspiring talk about how baby hatch changed nurses' mindset and struggles they continue to face, followed by active discussion on social changes, education, and mindset. Thank you for all of your support!

Thanks to all of your help, we are able to have Beppu WISE program! Great ideas presented.

Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University and Japan Institute for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship (JSIE) organized Women’s Initiative for Sustainable Empowerment (WISE) 2019 summer program on August 2-4, 2019 in Beppu Oita. This Beppu WISE 2019 program is designed to promote entrepreneurship and collaboration toward innovative solutions against various social challenges related to Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDGs). In that program, 33 participants from the U.S., Indonesia, India, Korea, Puerto Rico, Thailand, and Japan, had opportunities to shape ideas into plans through group work and to learn various types of leadership and communication skills. Mentors helped groups to shape plans: Mr. Haruaki Deguchi, Dean of APU and the founder of Lifenet, Inc., Ms. Miwa Koyasu, Founder and CEO of Will Lab, Inc.,provided practical advice. Dr. Rudra Pandey from Nepal, chairman and the CEO of Deerwalk, Inc. provided keynote speech, telling us that he had only $20 in his pocket when he started his business. Mentor Mr. Makoto Nakamura, a serial investor, and founder & CEO of Hanahana Works, and Sunaba, inspired all of us with his unique perspective “making a paradigm shift”. Thank you again for your continued support.

WISE Kumamoto was specially organized by JSIE with collaboration of Kumamoto Prefecture, to provide opportunity to individuals for shaping ideas into actionable project plans. Kumamoto people continue to face challenges caused by devastating earthquake; however, it means we have great chances to create new social values by turning such challenges into (social) business ideas. JSIE provided opportunities to shape such ideas into plans through two-day workshop and to learn leadership styles through group works to bring women and younger generations in action. During the program, 27 participants from Kumamoto, Tokyo, Chiba, Saga, and Yamanashi, and countries of origin include the U.K., South Africa, Vietnam, and Japan. Participants had opportunities to shape ideas into plans through group work and to learn various types of leadership and communication skills. JSIE will following up Kumamoto groups for their continued activities.
