As we continue our work to protect the precious wildlife in our region, your support has been invaluable, especially as we face an increasing number of incidents involving animals injured by speeding vehicles.
Recent Incidents and the Need for Vigilance
Earlier this month, a particularly tragic incident occurred on Hangklip Road in Pringle Bay. A speeding vehicle struck a large male porcupine, shattering his femur and causing severe abdominal wounds. Despite his injuries, the porcupine managed to hide, but was later found by concerned residents. Unfortunately, due to the severity of his injuries, humane euthanasia was necessary. This event underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and caution on our roads, especially within our biosphere where speeding cars pose the greatest threat to biodiversity.
This incident is not isolated. In the past three days alone, our center has received three animals that were injured by vehicles. Another heartbreaking case involved a dassie (Rock Hyrax) on the R44. A compassionate resident, Derick Cheyne, and his family witnessed the injured animal and acted immediately to help. Sadly, despite their best efforts, the dassie’s injuries were too severe, and euthanasia was the only humane option. We extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Kruger from Southern Vet for his unwavering support in these difficult situations.
Awaiting Permit Approval
While we await the necessary permits from CapeNature to expand our operations, we are inundated with calls about wildlife impacted by urbanization. Thanks to your generous support and our dedicated network of volunteers, rescuers, and veterinarians, we are able to prevent the suffering of many injured animals. However, the need for broader intervention and education within our community has never been more apparent.
Your Impact
Your contributions have been critical in enabling us to respond to these urgent needs. As we navigate the challenges posed by human-wildlife conflict in the Kogelberg Biosphere, your continued support will allow us to enhance our rescue efforts, educate the public, and ultimately protect the diverse species that make this region so unique.
