We with pride want to re-introduce our athletes from Machar colony some of whom have represented Sindh and hope to represent Pakistan in the near future. We recently participated in the Aster School All Pakistan Gymnastics Championship.
The girls of Khel, that have been making us proud year after year, win after win. Their strength, dedication, and teamwork has us and all who witness them perform in awe. The team won the Best Gymnastics Team Championship and the Best Gymnast was Aqsa in the first position and Kiran bagged the 2nd position. In the floor exercise, Aqsa stood 1st, Habiba won the 2nd position, while Kulsoom bagged the 3rd. In Vault, Kiran flew high and won the 1st position. While the 2nd position and 3rd position title was given to Aqsa and Kulsoom respectively.
Some of our team members also made it to the Sindh team that won 1st position at the Championship. Sonia & Samreen represented Khel & Imkaan in the Sindh Team. Sonia won second position as best gymnast, balance beam, floor and individual performance, while Samreen won 3rd position in floor exercise. Our boys are gaining confidence and gearing up to make the best team from Machar Colony. Ghafoor Shah and Abid Shah Alam were part of the under 15 Sindh team. The Sindh team were runner ups at the championship. Representing Khel, Abdul Rehman won 2nd position in floor and spring board.
A shout-out to our Imkaan team! Our coaches Furqan Raja and Adeel Abbasi make sure these guys train and put their best foot/flip forward. Nasira Khan, the wonderful coordinator and the head honcho at Khel, keeps everyone in line. Parvez Akhtar, without whom our day-to-day activities would never go smoothly.
Last but never least the Founder & Director Ms. Tahera Hasan, whose passion, sincerity, and empathy have carved a way of hope, respect, and love for everyone she works with.

The Gymnastics Team and Its Achievements

The gymnastics team of Khel has been in training since 2016 with qualified coaches. The girl's team has now reached the standards of international athletes in artistic gymnastics while the boy's team has been reformed and is in training. Participation in events such as interschool championships allows the teams to learn from their opponents and build upon their skills.

For the financial year 2021 - 2022, the gymnastics team participated in the following:

  • DCTO Gymnastics Competition for Boys (Level 1 and Level 2) where Yonus Idrees won 2nd prize in Level 1 while Ishaq Nazrul Islam won 1st prize in Level 2.
  • DCTO Gymnastics Girls & Boys 5th Interschool Competition where the girls team won the competition and bagging almost all top medals in floor exercise, beam and vault.
  • Green Flag Gymnastics Club Competition where Sonia Nazrul Islam won 1st prize in spring board and vault and 2nd prize in Floor. Kiran Jaffar won 2nd prize in vault and 1st prize in floor, and Habiba Jamal won 3rd prize in Beam.

Table Tennis Trainings & Team Performance:

Table tennis is a well-known sport in Pakistan. This fact is certified by the number of participants in interschool games and the level of performance by most. The table tennis team continues to train with coach Furqan. The older students are also helping in training the younger lot and continue to participate in interschool and club-level games. For the financial year 2021 - 2022, the table tennis team participated in the following:

  • Islamia Club table tennis competition in August & November
  • Karachi University table tennis competition where the girls team won the title.
  • Sindh Sports Board Event in March & October
  • KPT table tennis competition

Branching into Cheerleading

Gymnast makes great cheerleaders and transitioning from gymnastics to cheerleading can be difficult but not impossible. In cheerleading, you train as a team, you work as a team and you perform as a team! The team will always be there for you know matter what. Under the supervision of gymnastics coach Furqan, the girls and boys of the gymnastics team are now learning to be cheerleaders. While the team had already bagged an international award through online participation in a Russian competition, the local cheerleading competition began in 2021.

For the financial year 2021 - 2022, the cheerleading team participated in the following:

  • Sindh Cheerleading Gymnastics Championship where the boys and girls teams won the competition.
  • Pakistan Cheerleading Competition where the Khel team stood 2nd.

The gymnastics girls are winning. Yes they are winning each competition but only because the competition needs to be tougher. In Karachi, The Khel Team has been on the top of the gymnastics leader board since 2019. Even in 2022, the girls have been able to win the following games:

  • 5th Interschool Gymnastics Competition DCTO - the girl's team won the competition and the title.
  • Green Flag Individuals Gymnastics Competition - Sonia the champ one 1st prize in springboard, vault, and 2nd prize in floor set, Kiran won 2nd in Vault and 1st in floor and Habiba took the third place on the beam.

The gymnastics girls and boys have also formed the cheerleading team, flipping and flying their way towards all local championships. They are in the process of learning but were still able to win 2nd Prize in the Pakistan Cheerleading Championship.

On the table tennis front, Imkaan is looking for donors to set up the table tennis floor on the roof of one of the buildings. The cost of which is around $6000 inclusive of sports equipment. The cost also includes a fiberglass roof. Donors are welcome to donate for the team and can get in touch with us for further information.

The team is also in the process of forming linkages with the sports board to participate at the National Level. This is for both the gymnastics and the table tennis team.

The gymnastics and table tennis team continues to train with their coaches amidst the various waves of the pandemic. The girl's gymnastics teams learn to balance on the beam and up their skills with coach Furqan while the girl's table tennis team have surpassed the boys in their skills and are winning games.

The pandemic continues so do the activities at Khel.

Cheerleading: Imkaans gymnastics team was able to take part in The International Cheerleading Festival this year held in Russia. We were able to participate because the event was online and the lack of identity documents was not a challenge for us. We won the first position in team cheer freestyle in the junior category. We at Imkaan are elated with this news and hope that we are able to resolve issues of statelessness to enable these children to be able to participate internationally and nationally. This win is a reinforcement of our belief in their potential and our commitment towards advocating for equal opportunities for children irrespective of the origins of their parents or grandparents.

Gymnastics: Recruitment of the new gymnasts continues at Khel, a learning and recreational centre in Machar Colony, Karachi. The coaches are focusing on creating a boys-only team and with little ones participating and learning hard the effort is bearing fruit in the form of some young ones performing wonderfully. The girls are ready to participate in games that will be held locally but are postponed due to the pandemic. 3 out of 6 are now at the International level while the rest are at level 2 internationally.

Table Tennis: Imkaan is looking to expand its program by adding more tables and hiring coaches. Door-to-door awareness-raising sessions regarding the sports program is being conducted to add more members especially younger children to learn table tennis early.

Imkaan is looking to expand its sports program and updates its facilities in 2021 - 2022. More on that will be shared in the next update.
