A Grandmother's World

By Beverly Gilbert Stone | Director

Margaret and her 4 grandchildren at her room
Margaret and her 4 grandchildren at her room

Quietly, politely she approached the gate. Soon I was called to find an elderly woman sitting on the veranda. She shifted and smiled and stammered. Needing the assistance of a translator the new House Father sat and assisted her to tell her story.   She lives in one room with her four grandchildren. Her daughter, their mother, had left her with the 4 children, three years ago. Crippled with arthritis and beleaguered with chest pain, she is struggling to keep the children in school. They are behind with the school fees requested by the public primary and nursery school. The children’s uniforms are ragged and worn.

She is not requesting that we take the children into the home but that we help with the school uniforms and fees. The older children are of great assistance to her. Discussions with local residents and the chief and a home visit confirms and reveals a worse situation than imagined.

Thanks to donors like you we are able to assist this woman and not place her on an ever increasing waiting list. With your help this grandmother can maintain the relationship with her grandchildren and the children can receive an uninterrupted education.

We have paid the children’s arrears in school fees but need donations for their uniforms. Fifty dollars purchases a complete uniform with shoes.

Thank you.
