Meet GRACE

Grace, so shy, hiding behind her mom.
Little Grace hides behind her mother’s chair as we hear her story. Painfully shy, the little girl, though 7 years old, has not started her education. Her mother is afraid that her daughter will never attend school and that she will be punished for “keeping” her child from school though the reason is lack of funds. She herself is not well educated and does not have regular employment. When she does find work it is difficult as there is nowhere to leave her children. Caught in this dilemma, the mother approached us to help enroll her daughter in Nursery school. As the public school is quite far and Grace so painfully shy, she needs to attend a small private nursery school close to her home so her mother can walk her to school. The contribution the mother is asking for the nursery school, uniforms and other fees is $85.00 USDollars, 7,100/= Kenya Shillings, or 60Euros. School begins in January. This is one of the ways your donation is used.

PLAN AHEAD:
The new school year in Kenya begins in January. Expanding Opportunities supports 24 students in education with a waiting list. Though public education is “free” in Kenya, there are many costs involved in attending school. Each child is expected to have a uniform, school shoes, book bag, lunch, exam, and other fees. In some areas the public schools are extremely crowded or distant so private school attendance is necessary. In other cases boarding school is necessary. Expanding Opportunities assists with the purchase of uniforms, books, school supplies, school fees and/ or boarding fees based on an individual needs assessment.
Some students need only a uniform and shoes costing approximately $50.00; others need a full year of boarding school for approximately $800.00.
Education is power and creates long term sustainability. We offer the opportunity for you to be part of creating sustainable development by sponsoring an individual child or contributing to this effort.
For a limited time, through Global Giving's Gifts for Good, a set of handmade, hand painted metal bookmarks are sent to you as a thank you for a donation of $25.00.

SCHOOL's OUT!
By Beverly Gilbert Stone | Director
![A Kenya Classroom]()
A Kenya Classroom
School has closed in Kenya for 2013. Expanding Opportunities assisted 24 children in some way in 2013. One of them completed high school, three of them completed Class 8 and will move into high school next year. Most of the 24 improved in every subject, and all were promoted to the next grade. Educaiton is power opening options for the climb from poverty. Research shows that children meet or exceed the education of their parents so the benefit of educating children reverberates for generations.
Though school is out and children's thoughts far from the classroom, Expanding Opportunities is planning for 2014. We expect to be assisting more than 24 children in 2014 but we cannot do it without your help. Education assistance ranges from the purchase of a needed textbook or exam fee at as little as $5.00 or paying for high school boarding fees for an orphan at $700 per year.
As you plan your holiday season, please consider gifting a child's education.
