This project will address the problem of wrongful detention and conviction in three prisons in Nigeria and help select 100 inmates who are wrongfully detained or convicted to death to get justice. In agodi prison there are a lot of complaints of unjust detention including the criminal who is due to get judgment are being detained for over one year without going to court, if there is nobody to speak on their behalf they will continue to rotting away in detention.
Prison Congestion: In Agodi Prison, Ibadan, Nigeria, our experience shows that there are many cases of innocent and wrongfully convicted inmates. There are many inmates that are still awaiting trial.Eighty-five percent (85%) of inmates in Nigerian prisons are Awaiting Trial (AT) and about thirty-five percent (35%) of these are believed to be innocent. Many of them are languishing in detention because there is nobody to speak on their behalf as a result of poverty
We solve the problem by carrying out full investigations on behalf of the inmates to unravel the allegation for which they were arrested detained or convicted and forward such petition to appropriate quarters to facilitate their freedom. Often time we invited the Chief Judge to visit prison for on the spot assessment and we have volunteers lawyers who help for free service
Law and order will be restored. Innocent people will no longer stay more than necessary in detention and criminal will no longer escape Justice. we will always frustrate and checkmates and discourage frivolous charges by exposing police through the use of media and information technology and sue them for damages in any case of unjust detention where it is necessary.
