Digital Livelihoods for 1,000,000 At-risk Youth

While global citizens all around the world celebrate Dussehra, one of India’s grand festivals, there is one episode of violence against women every 20 minutes in India. This year, as Dussera coincides with DAAN Utsav or the Joy of Giving, our TASK FORCE worked tirelessly to identity and support 100 stricken survivors of trafficking, between 18 to 26 years, near the Indo-Bangladesh border, 100 young women who currently entangled in poverty trap, riddled with financial debts, and vulnerable to drugs and forced early marriages.

Our TASK-FORCE vetted and verified the backgrounds of these 100 young girls who are struggling with several threats and high food insecurity. With an aim to give them back a life of dignity in their most vulnerable disaster, our SAVE A DURGA THIS DUSSEHRA initiativerequests your URGENT support to help us equip these at-risk girls by providing them with new job-skill training in a safe-and-secured environment followed by a stable livelihood.

While we prepare them to earn their own bread, our emergency response would be providing them with necessary counselling and job-training till the time they get an income-flow.  ANUDIP, through its BEST (Building Entrepreneurs to Stop Trafficking) program, will enable these disadvantaged women and girls to find viable and respectable lives and livelihoods.

Thanks to your support over the past year. Your patronage helped us ensure women and girls from the margins could continue accessing technology for sustainable and ambitious careers.

Our report sheds light on the challenges facing women and girls as a result of the gender digital divide. In the patrilineality of India’s society, women bear what is often an unfair burden of representing the family they are born into, or later married into. Digital illiteracy and unfamiliarity with digital platforms deterred many women students, aspiring job-seekers and entrepreneurs from moving to online. Our 30 year-old alumna from rural Jharkhand reports “I own a smartphone, yet my online activities are often governed by male relatives owing to my unfamiliarity with such smart devices.”

Over 100,000 women and young girls have benefitted from Anudip’s counselling, skilling and technology-driven livelihood programs. They have taken up what in their communities would be termed as ’atypical of women’ careers - working in cutting edge technologies. Our students have on an average seen a 240% increase in family income after securing jobs, leading to transformative, sustainable change. Here is an example of how our beneficiaries are going from strength to strength and transforming not just their own lives but their families.

How we do it?

Curated for socially disadvantaged women- groups, ANUDIP’s technology driven interventions take into account the vulnerabilities that these women and girls have to face, ensuring that they learn and work independently, keeping aside the social discrimination by:

• Providing a comprehensive skilling course starting with basics of a IT, internet, identifying and understanding software
  
  
• Enhancing in-debt skilling in deep programming and digital languages to enable the girls to communicate with these software/codes effectively
  
  
• Training in financial and soft skills – including a command over English which is an intimidating space for these women who have been to vernacular medium schools
  
  
• Linking the women to the new-age employers, or crowdsourcing business module which allows them the flexibility of working within their familiar spaces
  
  
• Mentoring and hand-holding through the transition into financial independence and creating their command over safe online practices
  
  
• Creating economic independence and a way to break out from their traditional income-generation methods of the vicious cycle of poverty
