The goal of our fundraising is to jumpstart the Water & Climate Change Lab. Water, along with energy, food, healthcare, and communications, are the foundations of sustainable and resilient communities. The WORP will integrate topics of environmental justice, climate change, and sustainability & resilience (S&R). The Water Lab will be in our new headquarters so that we, as well as other organizations, communities can use them to perform water quality tests.
The waters of the Archipielago of Puerto Rico are being contaminated by illegal water management practices including; trash disposal near or in rivers and others bodies of water, coastal construction, faulty sewage systems. People are being exposed to contaminated water in the beaches, rivers and estuaries, some of this contaminated waters can end up in crops when rivers overflow, contaminating soil & food as well.
Water and Climate Change Lab will allow community members and organizations take an active role in testing the local waters so that they can modify their behaviors and educate the community about the risks. This Lab will empower the people to take an active role in the management of the bodes of water in their communities as well as educate them about the best strategies to manage trash, bodies of water, construction and all the other related factors.
The communities of the southwest area of the island will have the opportunity to develop a staff of community members that will be empowered and educated to test the local bodies of water, notify the community of the risks and educate the people so that best water management practices guide their daily culture.
