In the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, building piped irrigation systems profoundly improves the lives of villagers whose homes and crops have been destroyed by landslides. This charity project will install systems to run along a summit and bring water from springs above to irrigate thousands of walnut and cherry trees while stabilizing the mountainside. A reservoir built above each village will also add clean drinking water. Donate now to build irrigation systems for fruit trees in Morocco.
Due to deforested mountainsides and heavy seasonal rains, villages in the High Atlas Mountains are vulnerable to erosion and mudslides that destroy villagers' homes and the subsistence crops they depend on. Without potable water, they must use streams and irrigation ditches for drinking water that contain high levels of harmful micro-organisms due to being open and pre-used by upstream communities and animals. Rural communities experience four times the infant mortality rate than urban ones.
Piped water delivery systems installed to serve farming villages divert water along mountainsides into irrigation pipelines and then to reservoirs rather than flowing directly down into the river. This supplies each village with clean drinking water. Constructed agricultural terraces enable pressure/drip irrigation of walnut, cherry, and almond trees, maximizing water efficiency and the number of trees that can be planted. This priority project most effectively promotes health and livelihoods.
Installing pipelines and drip/pressure irrigation systems makes it possible for farming families to plant and harvest thousands of organic fruit trees and aromatic herbs, more than doubling their average household incomes. Anchored trees grown on agricultural terraces prevent erosion and stabilize soil to reduce mudslides. Clean drinking water reservoirs reduce water-borne diseases, halve infant mortality, and increase availability of time for women and girls to engage in educational activities.
