Ghana - GAF beneficiaries learning new skills
Thanks to contributions from donors to USA for IOM, we are able to continue our commitment to IOM’s Global Assistance Fund, an emergency fund that offers personalized immediate protection and sustainable direct assistance to migrants in vulnerable circumstances across the globe.
The renewed commitment was signed at the IOM Office in Washington, D.C. by Mr. Yitna Getachew, Head of Protection Division where GAF sits, together with Maria Moreno, CEO of USA for IOM.
The beneficiaries will be migrants subject to or at risk of violence, exploitation, and abuse; victims of trafficking; vulnerable migrant children; migrants in extreme psychological and physical distress with identified protection concerns; stranded and/or smuggled migrants who require return assistance.

The 30th of June finalized the implementation of the second phase of the project and, with the essential support from USA for IOM, the Global Assistance Fund (GAF) identified and provided assistance to 86 eligible beneficiaries, corresponding to 42 women, 24 men, 9 girls and 11 boys.
This result is outstanding since the project aimed at assisting 15 migrants. The target was hence exceeded by supporting an extra 71 throughout the project duration, from July 2022 to end of June 2023.
The key achievements of this project, during this phase of funding, included:
- provision of individualized protection and assistance services to a record number of beneficiaries given the funding received;
- stronger partnerships developed with other IOM global funds, such as the Emergency Victim Assistance Fund (EVA) and the Humanitarian Fund for the Assistance of Stranded migrants (HASM)) which referred eligible migrants to GAF and co-funded some of the assistance;
- conceptualization and implementation of the first skills training organized under GAF directly with beneficiaries, delivered by IOM Ghana and partners.
Once again, thank you for your support to this project!

A Ukranian family assisted from Uzbekistan to Poland
By Sonia Agnesod | Planning, coordination and compliance
A Ukrainian single mother and 2 children were identified in Uzbekistan, where they were living in dire circumstances.
IOM provided support for the living costs: food and non-food items, including winter clothes and school supplies for the children. They received tablets for the children to attend school remotely, accommodation and cash for other basic needs, documentation assistance, health care to treat a leg injury and access psychosocial support.
Once it was established that the best interest of the children and mother was to move to Poland and conditions allowed, IOM coordinated the organization of the travel and covered the related costs (flight tickets, medical check ups and in-ground transportation in both countries).
The family was received by IOM Poland staff and recurrent follow-ups were done to ensure the adequate integration of the family in the country.
