YoungArts is gearing up for its 2018-19 season, which promises to be another exciting year for the organization. YoungArts has a full calendar of energetic programming and events on the horizon, including signature regional weeks and robust programs that will highlight the organization’s talented alumni. 

Visual, Literary, Design and Performing Artists 15-18 Years Old Encouraged to Apply to National YoungArts Foundation 

Call For 2019 Applications Open Through October 12, 2018 

Through October 12, emerging artists in the visual, literary, design and performing arts ages 15–18 or in high school grades 10–12 are encouraged to apply to YoungArts to participate in one of the most comprehensive programs dedicated to supporting and propelling young artists. YoungArts winners receive the opportunity to participate in intensive programs nationwide; engage with renowned mentors; the chance to be nominated as a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts; monetary awards, including prizes of up to $10,000; and ongoing support as they work to achieve their professional and artistic goals. Prospective candidates should submit applications online at http://www.youngarts.org/apply

YoungArts winners are designated as a Finalist, Honorable Mention or Merit winner through a blind adjudication process by an independent panel of highly accomplished artists. The 2019 Finalists, the most talented artists from across the nation, will attend the organization’s signature program, National YoungArts Week, in Miami from January 6–13. During the week, winners work with distinguished artists in intensive master classes, workshops and seminars and share their work with the public through performances and screenings at New World Symphony as well as writers’ readings and an exhibition curated on the YoungArts campus. National YoungArts Week will culminate with the YoungArts Backyard Ball performance and gala. The event celebrates the year’s outstanding YoungArts winners and raises funds to support YoungArts programs.

New and Expanded Alumni Initiatives

In advance of its upcoming season, the National YoungArts Foundation is renewing its commitment to the arts by increasing resources and support for winners and alumni. In support of the organization’s mission to nurture and support artists throughout their life cycle, YoungArts will increase the amount of resources available to artists at their second critical juncture — the transition from student to professional. This support will include access to fellowships, residency programs, career development symposia, and exhibition and performance opportunities with YoungArts, its cultural partners, and its alumni network comprised of over 20,000 artists.

YoungArts is further expanding its support for alumni across three areas: artistic development; presentation opportunities; and professional development.

YoungArts is continuously growing the support for alumni artists throughout their careers with professional and artistic development opportunities,” said Carolina García Jayaram, YoungArts President and CEO. “For this new season we are excited to invite art supporters in Miami and around the nation to join us and experience YoungArts winners and alumni, who will showcase their works through a variety of programs, residencies, performances and exhibitions." 

Artistic Development
For the 2018/2019 season, YoungArts is expanding residency opportunities available to alumni through various new partnerships.

Starting September 10, 2018, YoungArts alumna Jay Jackson will take over the YoungArts Jewel Box for a dance residency that will include the creation of a new piece featuring multiple YoungArts alumni in Classical Music, Dance and Design Arts, as well as public performances, workshops and community engagement.

A new partnership with Aimco will offer six Visual Arts alumni the opportunity to create site-specific installations in a public exhibition space at Bay Parc Apartments in Miami over the course of two years. Accompanied by activations and art talks, the project connects artists to the public and aims to foster art as an integral part of living in Miami. The first resident artist is Nadia Wolff (2016 Winner in Design Arts and Visual Arts & U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts), who will explore space structure within a black Caribbean context, and transform the exhibition space through printed works into a collage that channels the energy inherent to Haitian cities, homes and history.

For the third consecutive year, YoungArts will continue its In Process residency program dedicated to interdisciplinary collaboration. At the conclusion of the residency, two YoungArts alumni will showcase their work on the YoungArts Campus through a public presentation and conversation. This year, In Process will highlight YoungArts’ over 30-year history of supporting artists by focusing on intergenerational work and pairing alumni not only across disciplines, but generations.

Presentation Opportunities

Since 2013, the two-story YoungArts Gallery has hosted exhibitions by YoungArts master artists, winners and alumni, including Olafur Eliasson, Daniel Arsham (1999 Winner in Visual Arts) and Hernan Bas (1994 Winner in Visual Arts).

This fall, YoungArts presents “Education as the Practice of Freedom,” an exhibition curated by Jasmine Wahi  whose practice predominantly focuses on issues of female empowerment, complicating binary structures within social discourses, and exploring multipositional cultural identities through the lens of intersectional feminism. Opening on October 9, 2018, 

the exhibition will feature works by Visual Arts and Design Arts alumni that are in conversation with one of three prompts or “phases” related to the idea of transgressive education in Bell Hooks’s Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom. The exhibition will feature additional programming in celebration of Miami Art Week in December. In spring, YoungArts will present an exhibition featuring the work of Photography alumni.

Additionally this season, YoungArts will also support our Visual Arts, Design Arts and Photography alumni with exhibitions and residencies with the following partners:

Alumni work will be available for purchase at two of the nation’s premiere art fairs: Pulse Miami Beach Contemporary Art Fair in December 2018 and EXPO Chicago in September 2018, where interdisciplinary textile artist SHENEQUA (2011 Winner in Visual Arts), the inaugural recipient of the Daniel Arsham Fellowship, will present her new body of work. The wall-mounted sculptural hair weavings mimicking African-American hairstyles like braiding and bantu knotting explore cultural heritage and contemporary identity and celebrates family, womanhood, beauty and the idea of sacred space.

YoungArts at ONE will annually feature alumni works as part of the ONE Is Where The Art is art program by ONE Sotheby’s International Realty.

Professional Development
Building on the success of YoungArts’ mentorship model with master artists across disciplines, Up Next features talks, workshops and panels that help prepare YoungArts alumni for successful careers in their artistic fields. Led by industry experts and renowned artists, day long symposia take place in Los Angeles and New York, which are followed by showcases of alumni work and networking opportunities for alumni to collaborate with one another and pitch their work to leaders in the field.

YoungArts will also offer targeted half-day Up Next programming prior to all core program weeks for alumni who are serving as Resident Advisors in those programs.

YoungArts Post

In 2018, YoungArts launched YoungArts Post, an online community where alumni can connect, collaborate, find opportunities in their respective fields and access vital online resources to advance their careers. This initiative was conceived to adapt to the shifting tides of communication and interaction for alumni who not only live throughout the world, but also continuously travel and tour.

YoungArts Regional Programs Recap

YoungArts Miami (February 2018), YoungArts Los Angeles (March 2018) and YoungArts New York (April 2018) showcased the work of the talented 2018 YoungArts Winners. From performances in Miami at the Miami Theater Center, a visual arts showcase at Building Bridges in Santa Monica to an exhibition opening at MoMA PS1, these three regional weeks were packed with cross-disciplinary collaboration and learning opportunities for these young artists.

Applications open June 2018!

Applications to become a 2019 YoungArts Winner will be accepted from June 5, 2018 through October 12, 2018. Young artists between the ages of 15 and 18 or in high school grades 10-12 across the nation are encouraged to apply online at http://www.youngarts.org/apply.

The YoungArts application consists of ten disciplines to which young artists may apply: Cinematic Arts, Dance, Design Arts, Jazz, Music, Photography, Theater, Visual Arts, Voice, and Writing. YoungArts Winners are selected annually through a blind adjudication process and are designated into three categories: Finalist, Honorable Mention, and Merit. Finalists are eligible to participate in National YoungArts Week in Miami in January 2019, and all Winners are eligible to participate in one of YoungArts’ regional programs – YoungArts Miami, YoungArts Los Angeles and YoungArts New York – space permitting. In addition, Finalists and Honorable Mention Winners receive monetary recognition from YoungArts. YoungArts Winners have the chance to work with renowned mentors, such as Marina Abramovic, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Plácido Domingo, Frank Gehry, Jeff Koons, Wynton Marsalis and Robert Redford; receive cash awards of up to $10,000; gain access to significant scholarships; be recognized as a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts (YoungArts is the exclusive nominating agency for this high honor for artistically-talented graduating high school seniors); and perform and exhibit their work at some of the nation’s leading cultural institutions, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington, D.C.), MoMA (New York) and New World Center (Miami).

Outside the Box : El Ciclon (May 12, 2018)

National YoungArts Foundation’s signature Outside the Box program returns with “El Ciclón,” created by YoungArts alumna and director, filmmaker and choreographer Yara Travieso (2005 Winner in Dance). Described as a “wild neo-feminist mythology trapped inside a 1950s B-movie psychological thriller with singing, dancing, and just enough alligators” by Travieso, “El Ciclón” is a multidisciplinary transmedia story about protagonist Ava, who finds herself in a precarious situation facing an impossible moral decision. “El Ciclón” is a one-night-only performance on Saturday, May 12 at 8 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.) that will reimagine the YoungArts Plaza at 2100 Biscayne Boulevard as a South Florida swamp. Happy February! This month we look back on YoungArts’ signature program, National YoungArts Week, another successful annual Backyard Ball performance and gala, and look forward to our fast approaching regional programs in Miami, Los Angeles and New York.

YoungArts Week Recap

This year National YoungArts Week took place from January 7 – 13, 2018, where 166 of the nation’s most promising artists between the ages of 15-18 gathered in Miami to strengthen their craft. Performances took place all week long at the New World Symphony Center in Miami Beach and included voice, jazz, theater, dance, film screenings and a classical music ensemble, as well as writers’ readings and a visual arts exhibition. The winners attended master classes and workshops hosted by YoungArts alumni and highly regarded professionals in each discipline, including choreographer Nora Chipaumire, visual artist Teresita Fernandez and jazz musician, Jimmy Heath.

YoungArts Backyard Ball

On Saturday, January 13, 2018, the National YoungArts Foundation hosted its annual fundraiser in Miami, the Backyard Ball performance and gala, to help support the artistic development of the nation’s most promising young artists. Presented by Italian luxury brand Max Mara, chaired by Dr. Kira and Neil Flanzraich and emceed by WPLG-Local 10 News Anchor and Reporter Louis Aguirre, the evening honored Academy-Award winning playwright and YoungArts master teacher Tarell Alvin McCraney (1999 Winner in Theater) as the 2018 Arison Alumni Award recipient.

Guests enjoyed a series of inspiring alumni performances with artistic direction by Grammy Award winner Grace Weber (2006 Winner in Voice & U.S Presidential Scholar in the Arts) and featuring Thirdstory (Ben Lusher, 2010 Winner in Voice; Richard Saunders, 2008 Winner in Voice & U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts; Elliott Skinner, 2013 Winner in Voice), Nadia Alexander (2012 Winner in Theater & U.S Presidential Scholar in the Arts), Amanda Krische (2012 Winner in Dance), Jasmine “Jaz” Sinclair (2012 Winner in Theater), Jose “BOY BOI” Tena (2012 Winner in Dance), Elliot Wuu (2017 Winner in Classical Music), and an all-star alumni jazz band led by four-time Grammy-nominated pianist and composer Gerald Clayton (2002 Winner in Jazz & U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts) with Braxton Cook (2010 Winner in Jazz), Julius Rodriguez (2014 Winner in Jazz), Zack Ostroff (2011 Winner in Jazz & U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts) and Benny Benack (2009 Winner in Jazz).

The evening concluded with the Backyard Bash after-party on the YoungArts Plaza with dancing and dessert under the stars, with music by legendary DJ and producer Arthur Baker.

The event raised more than $1.5M in support of YoungArts’ programs in Miami, New York, Los Angeles and Washington D.C., which offer aspiring young artists life-changing opportunities to work with leading artists in their fields, present their work to the public, and collaborate across disciplines.

YoungArts Miami (February 25 – 28, 2018)

At Miami Theater Center, the public will have the opportunity to experience a dance, theater and voice performance on Saturday, February 24, directed by Caleb Teicher (2011 Winner in Dance) in collaboration with Michael Benjamin Washington (1997 Winner in Theater & U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts), Macey Sullivan and India Carney (2011 Winner in Voice and Theater & U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts); and on Sunday, February 25, a classical music concert directed by Dave Eggar (1987 Winner in Classical Music & U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts) in collaboration with composer Chuck Palmer and international performer, choreographer and educator Andrew Nemr (1997 Winner in Dance). On Friday, February 23, the public is invited to the YoungArts campus for a film screening, jazz performance and writers’ readings, along with the opening of a design, photography and visual arts exhibition curated by Rosie Gordon Wallace, on view until April 27. YoungArts Miami participants will also have the opportunity to learn from visual artists Loni Johnson and Robert Chambers, jazz pianist and composer Emmet Cohen (2009 Winner in Jazz), author and award-winning journalist Joan Morgan (who will also teach in Los Angeles and New York) and cinematographer Rick Delgado (1992 Winner in Cinematic Arts).

YoungArts Los Angeles (March 24-29, 2018)

Presented in partnership with the Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA, this year’s Los Angeles public offerings will include a jazz instrumental performance and writers’ readings on Monday, March 26; a classical music performance on Tuesday, March 27, directed by violinist Lina Bahn; and a multidisciplinary performance directed by master teacher and musical director Christian Hebel on Wednesday, March 28. On Sunday, March 25, a design, photography and visual arts exhibition curated by Jamillah James will open and remain on view until April 14 at Building Bridges. YoungArts Los Angeles participants will also have the opportunity to learn from Academy Award winning cinematographer Doug Blush (1984 Winner in Cinematic Arts), visual artist Mariah Garnett, Lucie Foundation Executive Director Cat Jimenez and distinguished jazz musician Dr. Ron McCurdy.

YoungArts New York (April 24-29, 2018)

On the heels of the YoungArts New York Gala on Wednesday, April 18, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the regional program in New York City will kick off in partnership with Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC). On Saturday, April 28, a dance, jazz, theater and voice performance directed by YoungArts alumnus and Tony Award-winning musical director Michael Arden (2001 Winner in Theater & U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts) will be presented at BAC’s Jerome Robbins Theater, followed by a classical music performance led by acclaimed cellist Jeffrey Zeigler and writers’ readings on Sunday, April 29. A design, photography and visual arts exhibition will also be presented. Details to follow. YoungArts New York participants will also have the opportunity to learn from acclaimed visual artist Derrick Adams, jazz musician Adam Larson (2009 Winner in Jazz), photographer Lydia Bittner-Baird and screenwriter Shari Carpenter.

Up Next Alumni Symposia

Building on the success of YoungArts’ model of mentorship with master artists across disciplines, day-long symposia called Up Next will feature talks, workshops and panels that help further prepare YoungArts alumni for successful careers in their artistic fields. Led by industry experts and renowned artists, the symposia will take place in Los Angeles on November 8 and New York on November 15.

YoungArts Miami Art Week Activations

During this year’s Miami Art Week, the National YoungArts Foundation will present two exhibitions of work by emerging artists, furthering their commitment to supporting the organization’s alumni as they establish themselves in the art world. At the YoungArts Gallery, IMAGINATION LAND: Fantastical Narrative, curated by multidisciplinary artist and YoungArts master teacher Derrick Adams, will feature new and recent interdisciplinary works addressing consumerism, gender roles, the environment and ceremonial ritual. At PULSE Contemporary Art Fair, Helen Toomer, co-founder and artistic director of STONELEAF RETREAT and former director of PULSE, will curate a booth titled Searching exhibiting works by 15 YoungArts alumni.

IMAGINATION LAND: Fantastical Narrative

Curated by Derrick Adams, IMAGINATION LAND: Fantastical Narrative is a group exhibition featuring YoungArts alumni whose works respond to and are in conversation with consumerism, gender roles, the environment, and ceremonial ritual. Including video, sculpture, painting and performative works, the exhibition explores how the mechanics of art production play a major part in the way we see ourselves as products of our environment. Provocative, complex and self-referential, the exhibition proposes new ideas and concepts of external objects, fuses the possible with the impossible, and invites the viewer into a space of self-discovery.

Searching: PULSE Contemporary Art Fair

PULSE Contemporary Art Fair, 4601 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach (Booth S-212). At PULSE Contemporary Art Fair ad Indian Beach Park, former PULSE Director and now co-founder and artistic director of STONELEAF RETREAT Helen Toomer will curate Searching, an exhibition of works by 15 YoungArts alumni. The YoungArts booth is one of over 70 galleries from five continents. The thirteenth edition of PULSE in MIami Beach will be held from December 7-10, 2017.

Shining a national spotlight on Miami as a place where artists are supported and cultural momentum is growing, YoungArts is offering its alumni with roots in the area an opportunity to participate in In Process: Homecoming, an artist-in-residence program dedicated to collaboration. The program will provide artists with time, space and resources to create work and encourages them to recruit other YoungArts alumni to participate, experiment and innovate with them. At the conclusion of the residency, the artists will showcase their work in the neighborhood where they grew up, further expanding YoungArts’ programs into communities throughout Miami.

The YoungArts Gallery has hosted exhibitions by YoungArts master teachers, winners and alumni, including Olafur Eliasson, Daniel Arsham and Hernan Bas since 2013. This fall, YoungArts will present IMAGINATION LAND: Fantastical Narrative, a group exhibition of works by 11 YoungArts alumni curated by multidisciplinary artist and YoungArts master teacher Derrick Adams. On view from September 9 through Miami Art Week, the exhibition features artists whose works respond to and are in conversation with consumerism, gender roles, the environment, and ceremonial ritual. Including video, sculpture, painting and performative works, the exhibition explores how the mechanics of art production play a major part in the way we see ourselves as products of our surroundings. Artists include YoungArts alumni from the past five years: Elle Cox, Glenn Davis, Su Wan Kim, Mateo Nava, Mika Rosenberg, Sebastian Ruiz, Celia Shaheen, SWAG FUTURE David Correa x Alberto Checa, Cornelius Tulloch, and Wade Winslow.

YoungArts' celebrated Outside the Box series, which features multidisciplinary performances by YoungArts alumni on the YoungArts Plaza will continue on November 4, 2017 with Outside the Box: Yara Travieso. Director and choreographer Yara Travieso, known for creating hybrid works of cinema, opera, theatre and dance, will curate an all-women YoungArts alumni music festival presented within one of her signature immersive set designs and alongside Travieso’s cutting-edge transmedia choreography.

Next summer, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education, YoungArts will present the first ever Visual Arts Alumni Showcase in Washington, D.C. Notably, for the past 34 years, YoungArts has partnered with the Department of Education on the U.S. Presidential Scholars program and serves as the sole nominating agency for the U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts.
