Challenge

At noon on November 21, 2022, a powerful 5.6-magnitude quake hit the Cianjur region in West Java at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), causing buildings to collapse while school classes were underway. The local Government has announced an emergency response period of 30 days, starting Nov 21 to December 21, 2022. The quake took more than 268 lives, officials reported, more than 7,000 people live in evacuation centers or with their relatives and families in a safer location.

Solution

IDEP Foundation is currently coordinating and networking with our local partners to identify the most urgent needs of the affected communities. During emergency relief, IDEP supports the affected communities by providing basic needs, especially during the first 30 days after the disaster. On medium and longer rehabilitation and recovery phase, IDEP will increase awareness and capacity build local schools and communities on preparedness, especially the earthquake-safe houses and schools.

Long-Term Impact

For recovery and rehabilitation (medium to long-term) phase, with previous experiences in earthquake-safe house reconstruction, capacity building, and awareness-raising campaigns, IDEP will work with schools and local communities to address skill gaps and ensure communities live in a safe environment and can prepare for the disaster.
