Identity is crucial to one's well-being and is their right as defined by the law. However, the process of obtaining a Special CNIC (SCNIC) for persons with disabilities is tedious and can take up to 12 weeks. To facilitate the process, NOWPDP conducts One-Window Camps that reduce the time taken to process an SCNIC to 1 day. Through this fundraiser, we aim to transform the lives of 125 PWDs by empowering them in seeking their identity and becoming equal citizens of the law.
According to WHO, 16% of the world's population is of persons with disabilities (PWDs). If we apply this to Pakistan, it will roughly translate to 27-33 million people. However, due to administrative issues, lack of awareness, and the taboo associated with disabilities, one of the biggest challenges is the accurate registration of PWDs in the national database. In the 1998 census, only 2.38% of the PWD population was recorded and this came down to 0.48% in the 2017 census.
NOWPDP conducts One-Window Camps to bring all the relevant government departments under one roof. This reduces an exhausting process of 12 weeks down to one day. This allows a greater number of people to register themselves in the National Database and therefore gain access to the benefits and facilities allocated to them as per the State.
By gaining their basic right to identity through these SCNICs, a world of opportunities can open up for persons with disabilities. These include but are not limited to: right to education, healthcare, accommodation, employment, financial empowerment. Your contribution will create a life-changing impact in the lives of 125 persons with disabilities.
