While we wait for the funding to arrive, we continue to play and teach our kids in The Back Yard during the day and when the weather permits.
We have The Back Yard open most days after school and have held Saturday sports tournaments, plays that the kids performed, group study sessions, birthday celebrations, and a harvest celebration fiesta.
As always, food of some sort is supplied.
In addition, our laptop computers are available to the teenagers for schoolwork.
We have had discussions with several corporate funders and we hope that one or more of those will initiate their giving this year.
Nonetheless, thank you for your support to this project. The need is significant and the benefits are showing.
First of all, we have a name for the center: The Back Yard (TBY).
Although these kids have never had the back yard that most of us had growing up, this name was chosen because we want it to be a comfortable and safe place for kids to come and learn while having fun.
Several people have volunteered to help us with the design and development of TBY. We have been in contact with several companies in the US who have been instrumental in advising on options for the shape and materials needed that will withstand the occasional hurricane and yet be inexpensive and fully functional. We also have a concrete firm ready to provide discounted materials and time for the project, and interest from other companies on Cozumel.
Of course, the kids are looking forward to changing the dirt, gravel, and at times, mud field to a place they can use anytime.
As the search for funding continues, we are also working to acquire items for the center.
For example, we have had generous donations of children’s books. They are mostly hard-bound and nearly new. Thanks to these wonderful donations, children are learning how to read in both Spanish and English.
We found a donor of used business laptops and they will be used for students to work on their homework. Many students in our community do not have a computer at home and/or they do not have internet access. These laptops will allow them to work on assignments after school instead of sharing a computer during school and having to rush themselves because of time limitations.
The Waves of Grace Church has provided the space to have the students come to read and compute until the community center is completed.
Sports equipment is very beneficial for all ages of the children, and special donations are being used to purchase them. We appreciate all amounts!
