In Cozumel, Mexico, Waves of Grace and SoulGives Company are partnering to help the children to sing, play and learn in a structured setting, day and night, much like the back yard many of us in the US had growing up. Through tutoring, mentors, and workshops at the planned community center, we will help hundreds of children, especially those who live nearby and whose parents earn less than a few dollars an hour. This program will keep kids in school help build a future for themselves.
Even though Cozumel is a tourist center, the children of the Mexican tourism workers do not have a safe place to play, study, or just hang out with friends. Consequently, they live on the streets and become exposed to dangerous influences.
Providing a safe area that is protected from sun, rain and darkness will allow kids to meet, play, and study safely throughout the day. The schools do not provide any activities outside of classes and students often do not have access to computers to do their class assignments. As a result, they rush during school hours to complete their work because they know they won't have another chance later on. Also, the average secondary school class has 40 students, so external tutors become invaluable.
Education is essential. The local Cozumel community struggles with preparing students for jobs other than entry level positions. The kids are capable to do more and deserve better opportunities. If we are successful, all families and the community will benefit.
