Schools play a vital role in disaster responseand are key to empowering communities through education and preparedness. By partnering with several schools across Dominica, we work to create safe, structured environments where students of all ages, educators, and communities can learn and practice essential disaster risk reduction skills. This collaboration not only strengthens the resilience of schools but also builds broader community preparedness, ensuring a faster recovery and a sustainable, disaster-ready future for all.
Together with elementary schools and fire officers, we hosted a disaster drill in November. This exercise allowed younger students to practice emergency response skills, emphasizing the importance of hands-on preparedness. We also supported schools in updating their emergency operations plans and introducing engaging educational materials. These equip children to understand emergencies and feel empowered to navigate them safely. Additionally, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, we trained secondary school teachers in Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis, ensuring disaster readiness skills are integrated into school systems. Each initiative strengthened the foundation of community resilience, transforming schools into pillars of safety and preparedness.
Mental health and psychosocial support (PSS) alsoplayanimportant role in disaster response. To address this,IsraAIDprovided PSS and self-care training to local educators, empowering them to better support the emotional needs of their students. These workshops emphasized the importance of mental well-being, recognizing that resilient teachers foster stable and supportive learning environments. .
IsraAID has also been preparing older students for leadership roles in disaster response by partnering with Youth Emergency Action Committees. This initiative provides participants with tools such as Psychological First Aid to support communities during crises while building vital skills in emergency coordination and community outreach. By fostering the next generation of disaster responders, we are creating a network of trained young leaders who are ready to take action and provide support in times of need. Together, IsraAID and the communities of Dominica are building a safer, more resilient future.
