Chamber Music Northwest launches 2016-17 Season

Emerson String Quartet: CMNW Artists-in-Residence

Chamber Music Northwest—it’s not just in the summer!  During the 2016-17 season, CMNW will present 13 concerts during the fall, winter and spring.  Five of these concerts are co-sponsored with Portland’5 Presents, and held in the Newmark, Winningstad or Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

The 2016-17 season opened September 30 with an outstanding performance by the world-renowned Emerson String Quartet.  Chamber Music Northwest is extremely fortunate to have the Emerson Quartet as our Artists in Residence this year, beginning with their 3-concert “Passing the Torch” blockbuster program in July 2016, the Emerson’s returned for 3 concerts this fall (two in Portland, one in Eugene).  We will next see them April 19-20, when they will perform two separate programs. The April 19th program of 20th Century Masterpieces features string quartets by Bartok, Berg and Shostakovich. On April 20th, the Emerson will perform a “Mozart Extravaganza” program in a special benefit event with a pre-concert gala dinner to raise funds for CMNW’s Education and Outreach programs.  The Emerson quartet members are also passionate about educating tomorrow’s artists and audiences—they spend time working with young people in our community whenever their busy schedules allow.

One group that the Emerson Quartet has coached is the Calidore String Quartet, an ensemble of young musicians that is the hottest new quartet in the chamber music scene.  The Calidore will make its first Portland appearance November 10, 7:30pm, at the Winningstad Theatre.  Their eclectic program includes works by Haydn and Mendelssohn, and a new string quartet written for the Calidore by composer Caroline Shaw.  We are excited to announce that the Calidore will return as CMNW’s Protégé Ensemble for the 2017 Summer Festival.

The 2017 Winter Festival, “Passion in Winter,” features world-class artists David Finckel and Wu Han, the Miró Quartet and the Montrose Trio. Four concerts, January 26-29, will feature some of the greatest Romantic masterpieces ever composed: Brahms, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Shostakovich, Beethoven and more!  In addition to the concerts, the artists will be busy with numerous education and outreach activities in the community, giving master classes, coaching local student ensembles, and offering an open rehearsal (free of charge) to our audiences.

Closely following the Winter Festival concerts will be the return of the Dover String Quartet, this time paired with Grammy-nominated mandolinist Avi Avital, performing a diverse program ranging from J.S. Bach to David Bruce’s “Cymbeline” (written in 2012-13).

Back, by popular demand after their sold-out concert last year, BLACK VIOLIN returns on April 3 to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.  This violin duo performs a genre-shattering fusion of classical, hiphop, jazz, country and rock.  Black Violin members Wil Baptiste and Kev Marcus inspire young people to get involved in music—they will work with student ensembles and give an education concert for school children in addition to their evening performance.  Last year, 2,400 students filled the concert hall to rock out with Black Violin!

Your support, through Global Giving, helps bring these outstanding artists to Oregon, and spend time with music-lovers of all ages in our community.  Thank you for your gifts, which are making great music accessible to all!
