These past few months have been focused on planning our exciting Summer Festival, our most diverse programming ever! During the 37 days of music (June 25-July 31, 2016) CMNW will present:
CMNW actively collaborates with many organizations. In February, when CMNW partnered with Portland’5 to present the Classical/HipHop crossover duo, Black Violin, we were able to organize a special school performance, which thrilled over 2,000 students from the Portland area. Later, during the evening public performance, the local Bravo Youth Orchestra, (3rd-5th graders from Rosa Parks Elementary School) got the thrill of their lives when they had the opportunity to perform with Black Violin on the stage of the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. They even made a video about it! Bravo Youth Orchestra performs with Black Violin (presented by Chamber Music Northwest)
Last month, CMNW brought former Protégé Project artists Samuel Suggs, bass and Daniel Schlosberg, piano/composer, to work with student musicians and also perform for a benefit event to raise funds for CMNW’s education and outreach programs. Together, they met with Creative Science Middle School students; Sam Suggs worked with the Portland Youth Philharmonic’s bass section, and Dan Schlosberg talked with Portland State University composition students about the creative process. Additionally, Dan was invited by BodyVox to choreograph a dance piece as part of their Pearl Dive project—adding “choreographer” to his resume.
The benefit event, “Take a Stand for Music” was a great success, raising $31,000 for CMNW education programs—more than twice our original goal! Sam and Dan performed at Portland’s Nordia House—the Scandinavian Heritage Foundation’s beautiful new facility in southwest Portland. CMNW will return to perform an all-Scandinavian program at Nordia House in July.
You make these incredible programs possible. Thank you so much for your partnership and investment in Chamber Music Northwest!
