Sustain home-care for 140 cancer-patients @Uganda

K.M is 68 years old widow from Ntungamo. a mother of seven children, 5  of them died. On the 2 remaining,one son is a drunkard who disappeared to Kampala six years ago. Basically, now she only has one child with her who is a peasant.

In 2013 K.M developed per vaginal bleeding, back pain and per vaginal foul smelling discharge. She was taken to a nearby health facility symptoms were slightly reduced and re occurred suddenly in severe form. She was rushed to Mbarara regional hospital for further investigations where is was confirmed with cervical cancer stage 2B and immediately referred to Mobile Hospice Mbarara where she was enrolled on one of our Projects (Road to Care), baseline investigations were done and sent for Chemoradiotherapy at the Uganda Cancer Institute.

KM only received 2 cycles of chemotherapy and it was stopped because she got so weak due to  severe effects presented like severe diarrhoea, vomiting and anaemia.

This year in march 2022 she developed vaginal stenosis and rectal obstruction which gradually worsened and this worried her so much thinking that the disease had reoccurred. She came back to UCI where she was reviewed and found out that it was stenosis.

 The patient was so relieved relived to find out that it was not reoccurrence of the disease as anticipated. She briefly stayed in the hostel to ensure that everything is well and later went back home peaceful.

KM is happy and appreciates HAU support rendered  to her that she would have died in 2013 because she had no one from her family to support her.

She also  stated;

” I would have been forgotten long time ago in 2013, my body and bones into mud and wattle……then she laughed!”

She is very grateful to God for giving her life up to this time despite the several challenges she has gone through
