Herbal garden at Aims Academy

By Angel Chitrakar | Senior Program Officer

Aims Academy (which has grade 1 to 12) located in Lagankhel, Lalitpur, Nepal had initiated the herbal garden program in the year 2010. Though the available open space inside the school premises is quite limited, the students have well managed the garden. Student groups have been formed to work in the garden according to daily routine. Being interested, even the watchman is putting his efforts towards gardening. Around 15 species of herbal plants are preserved in this garden; some of them are Sarpagandha (Rauvolfia spilanthus), Alovera, kapur, lemon grass, etc. This school was awarded for having the best herbal garden in the year 2011.

Water scarcity is the major problem that people in Kathmandu are facing today. It is so, in this school as well. Despite the need to buy water, the school is watering the garden ….. whenever it rains, the school and students feel very happy that their herbal plants gets nourished. To put in the garden, the students themselves also prepare organic manure from the leaves and weeds.

Ms. Sunita Maharjan teacher and in-charge for herbal garden informs that all the students (those who spend time in tending the plants as well as other students) have benefitted. She adds, “The herbal garden helps the students to recognize and learn about the herbal plants. Students enjoy observing the plants grow, and also the greenery of the school is maintained.”

Though there are many difficulties in gardening in such a congested place, the school has made a great effort to maintain the herbal garden.

We express our sincere gratitude for your help and look forward to your suggestions regarding our works. For more updates, visit our Facebook, Twitter, BlogYouTube Channel, as well as website.
