Imagine young people in Costa Rica spending their free time in a completely safe space. Lifting Hands provides local youth with a safe space after school giving tutoring on school subjects, employment skills, sports, and nutrition. This coupled with psychology attention, new technologies workshops and community integration overall, is making a strong difference in the neighborhood.
In Costa Rica, there are communities where the disadvantaged population has gathered and continues to grow in continuous risk. Since many children lack adequate support at home to help with homework or monitor academic progress, students struggle in school and fall behind their peers. Also, if children do not live in an environment that is conducive to safe play, they can miss out on developing vital socialization skills and healthy exercise habits.
Lifting Hands provides a safe space for adolescents to interact with one another and a variety of after-school activities. Offering classes ranging from ballet, swimming, jiu-jitsu, soccer, basketball, tutoring in all subjects, English, Spanish, Portuguese, cooking, sewing, and psychological counseling, Lifting Hands provides a multitude of opportunities focused on employment for their future.
The goal is to empower the community through education. Lifting Hands is changing the nearly 4000 lives in the Bajo de Los Anonos community of San Jose, Costa Rica. Literacy measurements and national test scores will improve. More students will graduate from secondary school and be college ready. Students and teachers will be computer literate and gain 21st Century skills for the marketplace.
