India is reeling from a devastating new wave of Covid-19 infections and deaths which is threatening to overrun the country's healthcare system. World Central Kitchen (WCK) is launching in hard-hit Mumbai as well as Delhi and Ahmedabad in the days ahead to provide fresh, nourishing meals to frontline medical staff working long hours in overwhelmed facilities. With your support, we can provide desperately needed food relief, and use the power of food to nourish communities and bring hope.
India is undergoing a horrifying new wave of Covid-19 infections. More than 200,000 people have lost their lives, now at a devastating 2,000+ deaths and 300,000+ new infections a day. This catastrophic surge is threatening to overwhelm India's healthcare system, with hospitals running out of beds and medical supplies such as oxygen dwindling. Courageous medical staff in Indian hospitals are working long hours in horrific conditions, doing their best to take care of the sick and save lives.
WCK is launching a food relief effort in India, prioritizing overwhelmed facilities to deliver nourishing meals to frontline healthcare workers. We will begin by supporting staff working day and night shifts in two hospitals in Mumbai. We will also provide juice/water with the meals, recognizing the extreme heat in India. With your support, we can expand to more hospitals and cities, such as Delhi and Ahmedabad. Fresh meals served during times of crisis provide sustenance, comfort, and hope.
The immediate focus of this effort is to provide food relief to medical staff working under increasing strain. With the fuel provided by a fresh, delicious meal, the courageous workers can continue their life-saving work and help India get through this difficult time. We do not know how long our activation will last, but we will continue to serve meals to overwhelmed medical staff for as long as we are needed and we have the resources to do so.
