Help Fund a Children's Burn Unit in Uganda

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our esteemed Donors for helping us donate towards our burn unit for children with burns.

Whispers Magical Children Hospital and maternity has treated a very good number of patients in the past three months and 5% are babies rushed here with severe burns. Treating burns is one of the most expensive treatment in hospitals because the materials used for dressing and re- dressing are of single use like stirlized gauze and bandages. Also most of the children with burns end up going for plastic surgeries and Grafting.

Most of the children we receive for burns are rushed in by good samaritans and neighbours for example last month we received a 7 year old girl who burnt almost 75% of her whole body while cooking for her siblings on a local charcoal stove. she was rushed in by her neighbour because the parents were not around. she was admitted in our hospital on zero charges because the good samaritan who brought her could not even pay the 25$ for consultation and admission.She has been admitted for almost a whole month in our hospital free of charge until she got better and discharged as out patient for re-dressing every after two days. Because the burns were too severe and requires grafting, we are in preparation to take that same baby for grafting in another facility on whispers account because the parents cannot afford.

Whispers also helps these children and the community through impacting knowledge in order to create awareness about how to prevent injuries caused by burns. This is done especially at the Hospital where by all the caretakers are gathered in small meetings every Tuesday and Thursday of  the week,  to be sensitised about different conditions for baby with burns needs extra care and proper hygiene in order to prevent infections.

Whisper’s Magical Children’s Hospital is well known for the proper management of burns cases.

Everyday we receive cases of severe burns at our hospital as most of these cases are burnt with warm water due to the negligence of the caretakers

Treatment of these burns patients is one of the most expensive procedures and services that we offer at our hospital.

Without your help, it would be hard to save the lives of these children. 

 We are very grateful with your help we were able to save the lives of 12 children who had severe burns in the last three months.

Some of these children get severe burns that they may even require plastic surgery.

We are so happy that the lives of these 12 children were saved and did not receive any deaths.

On discharge, we continue to monitor these children till they fully recover.

We would like to thank everyone who is donating towards our burns project. In the previous three months Whisper's Magical Children's Hospital and Maternity received a total number of 2,319 patients and among these, 15 patients were admitted for burns. Most of the burns were severe with total burn surface area of each child above 9%.

We didn't record any death, all the 15 children recovered well. Among the 15 children we received with burns include a one year old baby boy whose face got burnt by hot water causing a 9% total burn surface area on his face. He was adimitted in emergency unit, dressed, treated and monitored by our caring and loving nurses and doctors.

We are so happy that our lovely boy can smile again after a great improvement. He was discharged and will be coming back every after two days for review.

Whisper's Magical Children's Hospital treated five children with burns in the past three months. We have greatly helped these children and the community in many aspects including providing a clean and safe environment for their healing especially in relation to the materials used for wound dressing for example new crape bandages, free sterile gauze among others. Some of these materials are reusable in other health centres where some of our patients are first admited before coming to our Hospital. This exposes these children to infections.

Whisper also helps these children and the community through impacting knowledge in order to create awareness about how to prevent injuries caused by burns. This is done especially at the Hospital where by all the caretakers are gathered in small meetings to be sensitised about different conditions.

Above all, Whisper offers and provides these children with the most up to date medical care in the process of treatment and management of these injuries. We have excellent staff with knowledge on management of burns. This is most evidenced by the many number of burns patients we treat and fully recover inluding one of the patients who was treated last month, a 4 year old girl who sustained third degree burns of 36 surface area. She sustained the injuries one week prior to admission at Whisper and she was being managed from a certain health centre. She was poorly managed receiving only IV treatment without dressing. The wounds became very septic and the child was not improving. The mother was told about Whisper and when she brought the child she was managed excellently and within a week's time the child was discharged.

Whisper's Magical Children's Hospital is considered one of the best Hospitals in Jinja that treat burns. Basing on the findings at our Hospital, children under five years of age are greatly affected by burns. The community benefits from our hospital through our dedicated support towards the children who have sustained burns.

Some of the burns patients are treated for free because of the economic situations at their homes whereby the caretakers cannot afford the burns treatment bills at any hospital whereas a fews patients are charged some little money for the daily dressing which cannot even be compared to the costs incured during the treatment of burns.

We also impact the community through taking the children who have sustained complications due to burns for further management. This sometimes involves fundraising for plastic surgeries, skin grafting among others. In a month we receive around five children affected by burns and most of these burns are very severe but we go the extra mile to save the children's lives.

Some of the major causes of burns among children of below five years is economic status. Most of children come from deep in the villages where poverty is excess. Families live in small single roomed houses and thats where they cook from making it easier for the children to get burns accidents while playing.
