I am happy to bring an update of our orphanage activities. The orphanage is doing well, all the children and their caretakers are faring well even in this corona virus environment. The children are receiving tutoring at home because elementary schools are out of session in Ghana due to the Covid-19 situation. School will be back in session again in early January 2021. For now, we have hired tutors to teach the children basic reading skills at home.
Within the past two weeks, we have had to help two young girls. Janet is a secondary school student whose mother is dead. It was discovered recently that Janet was pregnant and that she had hidden it from both classmates and her teachers at the school. She underwent emergency cesarean operation to deliver her child recently. Now she had no where to go with the baby since her own mother is dead. The situation was brought to orphanage’s attention on October 2nd, 2020, by the government’s social welfare office of the district. The orphanage accepted Janet with the baby to help her let her surgery wounds heal and to support her to continue her education since she has just about 10 months to complete her secondary education. The orphanage is taking care of her and the baby at no cost to Janet since she has no means to support herself.
On the 26th of October 2020, the Social Welfare again brought another girl to the orphanage to seek our assistance. Cecilia is a 12 years old orphan who was staying with her uncle and his wife. Unfortunately, her uncle passed on and she was left to stay with her uncle’s wife. She had to endure series of maltreatment because her uncle’s wife claimed she was a witch who killed her parents and had killed her husband too. Getting fed up with the harsh treatments, she run away from home and ended up with the district Social Welfare, who had to find a temporal place for her to stay until they got in touch with her extended family. The Social Welfare eventually found a family member who came for her on the 2nd of November 2020. We were simply happy to be able to offer a temporal assistant to Cecilia. We will appreciate any assistant to our orphanage, even a $10/month donation can do so much in Africa.
