Many of us have protection from the elements, freezing winter to searing summer heat, but the homeless do not. UPO helps the DC Homeless throughout the year. UPO Shelter Hotline vans transported 157,297 people to shelters in 2015.
Funded by the Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness the UPO Shelter Hotline represents the entry point assisting Homeless folks off the street and transporting them to Homeless Shelters. We are pleased to report that the number of DC Homeless actually declined by 5.8% in 2015 – see attached PDF #1 Homelessness in DC 2015 report.
Your Donations to Help UPO Help the DC Homeless on GlobalGiving provides funds UPO needs to purchase the comfort items we distribute to the DC Homeless. UPO distributed 49,777 comfort items to the DC Homeless during FY 15 - see attached PDF #2 for details of comfort items distributed in FY15..
During periods of extreme cold and extreme heat the DC Government sends out Hypothermia and Hyperthermia Alerts by email and text advising DC Homeless to contact UPO Shelter Hotline for Help to get off the streets to shelters – see PDF #3 example of a Hypothermia Alert. .
In late January, 2016 a giant storm dumped 30” of snow in 36 hours and played havoc on all in the area, but was especially harsh on the DC Homeless population. UPO Shelter Hotline worked tirelessly before, during and after the blizzard answering 2,784 calls from folks needing help and transported 2,111 people to shelters.
Since joining GlobalGiving in March 2015 we have raised $10,718 from 146 generous donations. Thank you so much to all our generous donors for your support Helping UPO Help the DC Homeless. We only have $1,282 more to raise and we hope you will give us the support we need to reach our Goal of $12,000
We have a wonderful opportunity to reach our Goal on Wednesday March 16, which will be a Pro-Rated Bonus Day! GlobalGiving is putting up $75,000 in matching funds starting at 09:00:00 EDT on March 16th, all donations made to Help UPO Help the DC Homeless until midnight will be eligible to be matched at a Pro-Rated percentage.
