Getting ready for harsh winter in summer

By Oleksii Oryshchenko | Project Leader

It is now obvious that the upcoming cold season in Ukraine will prove one of the most challenging in its history.  According to Volodymyr Omelchenko, director of energy programs at the Razumkov Center, more than 70% of all Ukrainian generation facilities are currently destroyed, damaged or occupied.

Even now, during summer months, Ukrainians are facing daily power outages, receiving electricity for only several hours per day. In cold months, the effects can be way worse, as the entire heating system will be affected.

To improve Ukrainians' rezilience, the Ukrainian Red Cross has been supplying power generators and other essentials to critical infrastructure facilities, medical and social institutions all-year-round. Here are some highlights from the past few months:

  • The Kirovograd regional organization of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society, with the support of partners and donors, supplied three generators and 600 sleeping kits to places of temporary residence of Internally Displaced Persons. One generator was delivered to a dormitory in Novhorodka village, and two more were given to IDP shelters in Kropyvnytskyi. Residents of the dormitories received a 55-kilowatt generator.
  • The Novoukrayinska community received three new generators from the Kirovohrad Regional Organization of the Ukrainian Red Cross. Two of them are designated for the uninterrupted operation of the Invincibility Points (in Novoukrayinsky Lyceum No. 4 and Branch 1 of the Yubileinyi Civic Center) during blackouts, where community residents can charge their gadgets and keep warm during long power outages. Another generator is intended for backup power supply of the IDP center.
  • In the Cherkasy region, the Ukrainian Red Cross has been setting up shelters to accommodate internally displaced persons. In the Kamianske city territorial community, the Cherkasy regional organization of the Ukrainian Red Cross supported the development and reconstruction of one of the region's shelters. The organization has already purchased and delivered 6 refrigerators, 8 microwave ovens, 4 electric stoves, 4 washing machines, 7 electric kettles, 13 dining tables, 52 dining chairs and one powerful generator.
  • Kyiv Regional Children's Hospital has been made more autonomous thanks to the Ukrainian Red Cross and its partners. The following has been done: reconstruction of the centralized oxygen supply system and installation of an oxygen station, repair of the drainage system of the main hospital building, technical re-equipment of the power supply system - a  powerful diesel generator was installed.
  • Novobuzka Multidisciplinary Hospital received a powerful generator from the Myolayiv Regional Organization of the Ukrainian Red Cross.
  • Ladyzhyn City Hospital received a 100 kW generator from the Vinnytsia Oblast Organization of the Ukrainian Red Cross.

These are just a few of a large number of activities that the Ukrainian Red Cross has completed in the past several months. We keep working, and your support is what keeps driving us forward!
