An estimated 4 mln Ukrainians have been left without a roof over their heads, with 1,4 mln housing units being damaged or destroyed. In harsh Ukrainian winter conditions, the absence of proper shelter and warm clothes may quickly lead to hypothermia and death. With the onset of cold weather, the Ukrainian Red Cross made it its priority to prepare vulnerable groups of the Ukrainian population for the upcoming winter challenges.
Since last fall, Ukraine has been subjected to regular attacks on critical infrastructure facilities. According to experts, almost 50% of the country's energy system has been destroyed or damaged. Most of the damaged power facilities remain inoperational until now, leading to another winter of daily blackouts without heating. For families with kids and elderly people, whose houses were damaged, the upcoming cold season may result catastrophic, putting their very lives at risk.
The Ukrainian Red Cross (URC) helps people prepare for the cold months. We distribute wood-burning and electrical heating stoves, supply power generators for critical infrastructure facilities, replace shuttered windows in residential houses and hospitals, distribute hot meals and warm clothes, and organize mobile aid points across the country - these are shelters equipped with heating appliances that can be set up quickly at an emergency site.
The URC seeks flexible funding to prepare the most vulnerable Ukrainians for the harsh winter. It will also allow us to react swiftly to emergencies during the cold season that occur daily across the country. Together, we can save thousands of lives!
