Patient Relief Mission (PRM) exists to improve cancer care and management for female patients and their caregivers by providing hostel accommodation, transport to and from the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) for treatment, and three meals a day to patients from rural areas who would otherwise have nowhere to stay while receiving treatment in Kampala. PRM was founded with the aim of ending the needless suffering experienced by cancer patients and their families during treatment.
We are pleased to share significant progress made during this reporting period as we continue preparing the facility for future beneficiaries.
With the support of our generous donors and partners, we successfully completed the construction of the office and administration block. This facility will serve as the operational center of the hostel and will also house a pharmacy and examination rooms, enabling the provision of essential support services once the facility becomes operational.
We have also undertaken improvements to the compound, creating a safer and more welcoming environment for future patients, caregivers, staff, and visitors. Routine maintenance activities have been carried out to ensure that the grounds remain in good condition as construction and preparation activities continue.
Accessibility remains a key priority for the project. During this reporting period, we continued grading and maintaining the surrounding access roads. These improvements will make it easier for future patients, caregivers, staff, suppliers, and emergency service providers to access the facility, particularly during challenging weather conditions.
Although the hostel is not yet operational, every milestone achieved brings us closer to providing a safe, supportive, and dignified environment where cancer patients can stay while receiving treatment at the Uganda Cancer Institute.
Milestone Achieved
The completion of the office and administration block marks a significant milestone in the development of the Patient Relief Mission facility. This structure forms an essential component of the future hostel operations and lays the foundation for the delivery of administrative, medical, and pharmaceutical support services. The completion of this phase demonstrates the steady progress being made toward making the facility ready to receive its first patients.
Challenges
Progress has not been without challenges. Delays in funding have occasionally slowed the pace of construction and infrastructure development. In addition, heavy rains have resulted in poor accessibility and occasional landslides, making transportation of materials and access to the site more difficult.
Despite these challenges, the project team remains committed to advancing construction activities and ensuring that the facility is completed to a high standard.
Looking Ahead
Our priority in the coming months is to complete the remaining infrastructure and operational preparations required before the hostel can begin receiving patients and caregivers. This includes finishing the remaining facilities, enhancing utilities and support systems, and ensuring that all services are ready for operation.
We remain deeply grateful to our donors and partners for their continued support. Your contributions are helping to build more than just a facility—they are helping create a future refuge for cancer patients and their caregivers, offering comfort, dignity, and support during a difficult journey. With your continued partnership, we are steadily moving closer to opening our doors and serving those who need us most.
