Project Progress Report: Transport 7,000 Women for Cancer Treatment

Patient Relief Mission (PRM) aims to support women from rural areas who need to travel to the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) for cancer treatment. The project will provide transport to and from the treatment centre, helping patients access the care they need.

During this reporting period, we carried out routine maintenance on the project van to keep it in good condition and ready for use when transport services begin.

We also carried out grading and maintenance of the road network around the area where the hostel is located. The roads in this area are in poor condition, and heavy rains often cause slippery surfaces and landslides, making movement difficult. These road maintenance activities are intended to improve accessibility to the facility, particularly during the rainy season.

In preparation for the start of transport services, we have also carried out an audit and started engaging potential transport partners. These discussions are aimed at identifying suitable partners who can help us transport patients to and from the Uganda Cancer Institute once the project begins.

The project has not yet started transporting patients, as preparations are still ongoing. We are working to ensure that the vehicle is ready, access to the facility is improved, and suitable transport arrangements are in place before services commence.

Challenges

Poor road conditions remain a major challenge, especially during the rainy season when slippery surfaces and landslides make navigation difficult. Funding constraints may also affect the pace at which the remaining preparations are completed.

Looking Ahead

Our next steps are to continue maintaining the project van, engage potential transport partners, and finalise the arrangements needed to begin transporting women for cancer treatment. We look forward to starting the service and supporting women who face transport difficulties when seeking treatment at the Uganda Cancer Institute.

We thank our donors and partners for their continued support toward making this project possible.
