For Many Displaced Families, the Crisis Is Not Over

Dear Donors,

When the violence stops and the headlines move on, the suffering of displaced families does not simply end.

Across affected communities in Benue and Jos, families who fled violent attacks are still trying to live with what was left behind: destroyed homes, lost livelihoods, separation from loved ones, injuries, hunger, and the emotional pain of witnessing violence. For a mother who fled with her children, surviving the attack was only the beginning. She must still find food for her family, somewhere safe to sleep, clothes for her children, and medical care when someone becomes sick.

The scale of displacement shows why humanitarian assistance is still needed. Recent UNHCR reporting says Benue State alone is home to nearly 500,000 forcibly displaced people. Some families are attempting to return to their communities, but many are returning with very little and face the difficult task of rebuilding homes and livelihoods after violence forced them away.

The situation is even harder for widows, children, older people, people living with disabilities, and families who lost their source of income. When a home is burned or abandoned, a family can lose almost everything at once: stored food, clothing, farmland, livestock, household belongings, medicines, and the means to earn a living.

This is why Help Survivors of Christian Genocide in Jos/Benue remains necessary.

Our work is intended to meet some of the immediate needs survivors face. Food packs can help a family facing hunger. Medical care can help someone living with an untreated illness or injury. Clothing can replace some of what was lost while fleeing. Counseling and psychosocial support can give survivors a safe space to speak about grief, fear, loss, and the experiences they continue to carry with them.

These are simple things until you have lost them.

A meal matters when there is nothing to cook.
Medicine matters when a sick child cannot get treatment.
Clothing matters when a family fled with only what they were wearing.
Someone willing to listen matters when a survivor is carrying memories that are difficult to speak about.

Our donors make this work possible. To everyone who has given to this project, thank you. Thank you for remembering families who may no longer appear in the news but are still living with the consequences of violence and displacement.

There is still a great deal of work ahead. We will continue working to reach affected families with food, medical assistance, clothing, and psychosocial support as resources become available.

Please keep these families in your thoughts and continue sharing their story. Sometimes another person learns about a humanitarian crisis simply because someone cared enough to tell them.

Thank you for standing with survivors and reminding them that they have not been forgotten.
