Another Week of target attack in Plateau and Benue

Dear Donors,

For families living in communities affected by violence in Plateau and Benue States, peace can feel painfully uncertain.

A family may go to bed believing the night will be quiet.

A farmer may leave home expecting to return after work.

A passenger may board a vehicle believing the journey to Jos will end safely.

Then gunfire changes everything.

In September, communities across Plateau State experienced another series of deadly attacks.

On September 13, gunmen opened fire on a commercial vehicle at Dungus Junction in Kuru, Jos South. Nine passengers were reported killed.

Days later, more families were mourning.

Between September 19 and 20, at least nine people were reported killed in separate incidents around Barkin Ladi, Riyom and surrounding communities. Five people travelling toward Gana-Ropp were killed when their vehicle came under attack. Two others, including a pastor, were reportedly killed while travelling to church.

The violence became serious enough for the Plateau State Government to impose a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Barkin Ladi, Bokkos and Mangu.

Yet the killings did not immediately stop.

On September 22, a security team responding to a distress call around Rakok in Barkin Ladi was ambushed. More lives were lost.

Benue has also continued to experience violence. Earlier in September, armed attackers invaded Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area. Police confirmed that seven civilians and four police officers were killed following hours of fighting.

When we read numbers like these, it can become easy to count the dead and forget the people left behind.

Behind one person killed may be a wife who has suddenly become a widow.

There may be children waiting for a father who will never walk through the door again.

There may be an injured survivor who needs medical treatment.

And there may be a family too frightened to return home, wondering where they will sleep and how they will find their next meal.

This is where our project comes in.

Through your support, we are working to provide food, clothing, medical care and emotional support to families affected by violence in Plateau and Benue.

The need does not end when an attack disappears from the news.

A funeral must still take place.

An injured person may still need treatment.

A displaced mother still needs food for her children.

A child who witnessed violence may still wake frightened at night.

And a family whose home or livelihood was destroyed must somehow begin again.

To our donors, thank you for refusing to look away.

Every donation helps us prepare to reach survivors with practical support during a period when many have lost far more than possessions.

If this project speaks to you, please share it with your family and friends. You can also start an individual fundraiser and invite others to support families affected by these attacks.

The headlines may move on. The survivors cannot.

Thank you for standing with them.

With gratitude,
Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri
